As you may or may not know depending on where you live, there’s a nor’easter forming off the East Coast of the U.S. right now. CNN reports that 22 states are in the storm’s path. There will be plenty of snow and chilly weather in the Northeast. Whether you’ll be affected or not, you might still be feeling the winter blues and yearning for summer.
If you’re in need of a reminder of warmer weather, go ahead and live vicariously through your favorite TV characters, old and new, with these iconic episodes. As you know, every classic TV series has a vacation episode, and it’s usually to some place with a very warm climate. You’ll probably walk away from this post feeling pretty jealous of fictional characters.
1. Friends, “The One In Barbados”
There’s the classic episode where they go to the beach and Monica gets a jellyfish sting, but can anything compare to the Barbados episode, with its bounty of relationship drama and Monica’s humidity-ruined hair? And then of course there are the Bo Derek braids she gets to counteract the problem.
2. Full House, “The House Meets the Mouse”
Plenty of ’90s shows had episodes in Disney World, but nothing could compare to Full House. Little Michelle wanders around the park by herself, which would be terrifying for me when I was a kid, but ends up being magical for her, since she gets to hang out with all the characters like they’re BFFs.
3. Gossip Girl, “The Dark Night”
There’s a heave wave in New York City when all the power goes out. What ensues is a lot of betrayal and sexy people with fake sweat all over them. And there’s also the scene where Dan and Serena get stuck in an elevator.
4. Saved by the Bell, The Malibu Sands Episodes
In season 3, our favorite characters got summer jobs at the Malibu Sands Beach Club. There were lots of shenanigans, including a volleyball game with young Eric Dane of Grey’s Anatomy fame. Also Leah Remini was there.
5. The Brady Bunch, “The Tiki Caves”
Who could forget the time the Bradys went to Hawaii and there was the bad luck tiki statue fiasco? Nobody could, I tell you! Nobody could.
6. Seinfeld, “The Hamptons”
Plenty of classic TV was created when Jerry, Elaine, Kramer and George went to the Hamptons. It mostly changed the way we hear the word “shrinkage.”
7. Modern Family, “Disneyland”
The Pritchett/Dunphy clan already live in California, but there’s something about going to a theme park that makes everything seem warmer. Even if Haley’s wearing a cardigan, I still want to go to there.
8. Sex and the City, “Escape From New York”
In the ultimate fish-out-of-water episode, the girls leave New York City and head to L.A. so that Carrie Bradshaw can discuss making her book into a movie and also be annoying in a new location. Matthew McConaughey makes a fun cameo.
9. Sabrina the Teenage Witch, “The Good, The Bad and the Luau”
You didn’t think I’d leave this episode off, did you? Sabrina heads to Hawaii with Hilda and Zelda for a family reunion and meets her evil twin Katrina. Live vicariously through the warm weather, not the evil twin.
10. Gilmore Girls, “Girls in Bikinis, Boys Doing The Twist”
I love this episode of Gilmore Girls because Rory and Paris do Spring Break so wrong, and I can totally relate to that as someone who refrained from partying in college.
11. Growing Pains, “Aloha”
No TV vacation list would be complete without including the Growing Pains Hawaii episode. It seems that Hawaii was a very popular vacation destination for fictional characters in the ’80s and ’90s.
