Happy New Year! You did it! You made it through an entire year of pop culture without lying down in the street and waiting for Justin Bieber to hit you with his car.
Now, I’ll allow you precisely thirty seconds of patting yourself on the back and celebrating before we get down to business. Do you have any idea how many movies there are coming out this year that you need to get pumped for? And how quickly these things get out of hand if you don’t address them promptly? You’re barely prepared this year — don’t try to lie to me — and if you don’t do something soon, you’re gonna be faking your way through every awards season party that you get yourself invited to.
So to prevent that social tragedy from taking place again, I’ve put together a handy list of twenty movies that you should be looking forward to in the next twelve months, if you aren’t already.
Now GET GOING.
1. The Monuments Men
Based on the true story of a WWII platoon whose task is to return art from Nazi thieves to its original owners, this movie is super star-studded, featuring George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Cate Blanchett, among others.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Russell Crowe and Emma Watson, a retelling of the biblical story of Noah with an emphasis on apocalyptic themes.
The highly anticipated movie version of the YA novel, starring Shailene Woodley as Tris Prior, a girl who doesn’t fit into the roles that her divided society has assigned to her. Also featuring the extremely attractive Theo James and an up-and-coming actress named Kate Winslet. Maybe you’ve heard of her.
A retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the wicked queen (played by Angelina Jolie) and the events that led her to curse Princess Aurora, played by the decidedly non-British Elle Fanning.
The true story of brothers Mark and Dave Schultz, both Olympic Wrestling Champions, and Dave’s murder by paranoid schizophrenic John duPont. Starring Channing Tatum, Steve Carell, and Mark Ruffalo.
6. The Maze Runner
I haven’t heard too much about this myself except that a lot of people are really excited about it, so here’s the IMDb blurb: “Set in a post-apocalyptic world, young Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they’re all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow “runners” for a shot at escape.”
The teaser trailer tells you absolutely nothing, but it’s the story of a group of explorers who discover a way to use wormholes to travel through space. Oh and it’s written and directed by Christopher Nolan and acted in by an insane cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway.
8. The Normal Heart
An adaptation of the stage show of the same name chronicling the rise of AIDS in the gay community in the 1980s, the movie stars Julia Roberts, more Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, and Taylor Kitsch, among many others.
9. Child 44
In the Stalin era of the Soviet Union, somebody’s murdering kids, and as its investigated more fully, all signs seem to point to the very top party leadership. Starring Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy.
Another movie about Liam Neeson being a badass, this time as an air marshal aboard a hijacked international flight. Also starring Julianne Moore and Michelle Dockery.
