This Video Of Jason Sudeikis Singing Billy Joel Treads The Line Between Adorable And Annoying

Jason Sudeikis devil SNL

This video of Jason Sudeikis singing a Billy Joel song in Kansas City this weekend is a perfect microcosm of my conflicted feelings about him in general. Namely, I can’t decide if I have a crush on him or think he’s obnoxious. I’ve been struggling with these feelings for a while now, and I guess now is as good a time as ever to get it all off my chest.

According to TMZ, this past Saturday Jason and his fiancee Olivia Wilde and their bun in the oven went to Kanza Hall, where a local band called Summer Breeze was performing. Jason got up on stage with them to sing a cover of Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are.” I’ve watched the video multiple times now, and my brain keeps going back and forth between thinking it’s cute and funny and wishing I could reach through the screen and pull him off the stage with a giant vaudeville cane. And yes, I realize I’m definitely overanalyzing this, but bear with me.

On the one hand, karaoke is fun and relatable, as we know from that brilliant video of Robert Pattinson and Katy Perry doing it. On the other hand, the people in the crowd were probably there to hear the band perform, not to watch a former SNL cast member joke around. On the third hand, which I just magically grew to analyze this situation, there might have been people there who are fans of Jason and whose night was made by seeing him take the stage. Then again, there’s something sort of obnoxious about how he handles the whole thing, including his jokey announcement that he’s stealing the microphone. But he is from Kansas, and I always like to see celebrities get back to their roots.

I have sort of the same problem figuring out how I feel about Jason’s relationship with Olivia. I can acknowledge that their a cute couple with a good sense of humor about themselves, but then they give interview after interview about how much sex they have and it kind of turns me off. It’s a good thing Olivia isn’t in this video; then my brain would probably literally split in two from the indecision.

Put a tally in the “adorable” column for me. Unless, of course, there is a “I wish I was Olivia Wilde bc WOWOWOWWW Jason Sudeikis” column. In which case, put me down for that one.

Haha, I hadn’t planned on including that column, but I’ll create one just for you.

  • Not impressed

I’m a KC native and one of the few who isn’t totally in love with this guy. I think he’s one dimensional. His SNL characters were Jason Dudeikis (feel free to borrow that nickname) and deep voice Jason Sudeikis. I just don’t get the appeal (especially when we can claim Paul Rudd in our famous KC groups! He’s so much more!) Put me in the “finds him to be an obnoxious ham” category. Also, have you seen his movies? Paaaasssss.

I haven’t seen many of his movies, although I did like him on 30 Rock. The more I think about him on SNL, though, the more meh I think he was.

Obnoxious ham is a good way to put it. That was his whole schtick in “We’re the Millers”
