When Selena Gomez first announced that she was cutting short her Stars Dance Tour with only thirteen stops left in order to spend some ‘me time’ on herself, we figured that was code for a rehab stay. There’s no shame at all in needing some support in your personal life, but typically celebrities do tend to keep those sorts of struggles under wraps, using code words like ‘exhaustion’, ‘collapsed’, and ‘getting refocused’. And that’s what we thought Selena was up to — it was hard to imagine another explanation for things being called off so last-minute.
But a new explanation is surfacing, and whether you believe the rumor or not, it certainly gives you something to think about. According to the website PopDust, Selena was diagnosed with the disease lupus a few years ago, a revelation she’s kept to herself. Lupus is an incurable autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack and consume its own tissues and organs, and while it’s definitely something that people can and do live with (like Nick Cannon, for example), it has ‘flare ups’, which can consist of facial swelling, headaches, joint pain, and extreme fatigue. All things, in short, that would make a concert tour super duper uncomfortable. According to a source:
“Selena has been going full throttle the past few years and her Lupus is really catching up with her right now. She knows that she needs to take some time to address the disease and look after herself better if she wants to live a full and healthy life.”
There’s no telling whether it’s true or not, since her team has declined to comment, but either way, we wish the best for Selena. I hope she doesn’t have it, but if she does, I hope she’s able to take the time she needs to get back to feeling healthy. And if she doesn’t have it, I hope it’s not a rumor being used to screen the real issue, like rehab. Wanting privacy is one thing, but there’s truly no shame in any of it.
