Last week Selena Gomez announced that she was canceling the upcoming Australian leg of her Stars Dance tour because she needed some me time. Because canceling a tour is a pretty big — and probably expensive — decision, we suspected maybe something else was up, possibly a visit to some sort of rehab. But this weekend Selena took to Instagram to explain herself. Except she didn’t really explain herself at all, so luckily our trusty friend Anonymous Source spoke to E! News about the cancellation.
“Selena is OK. She just realized it was time to take a break for herself,” a source told E! News. “She’s been working non-stop for six years. She hit a wall. She wants to spend time with her family, especially for the holidays.”
Okay, I get it. She needs a vacation. Everybody does. But everybody doesn’t have an entire concert tour planned. Needing to spend time with family seems like a pretty flimsy reason to take that step. According to this source, Selena is just like those overworked Lifetime movie heroines who must discover the true meaning of Christmas. Except once again, those Lifetime movie heroines don’t have concert tours riding on their shoulders.
The source went on to respond to the speculation that Selena is going through something more serious than workaholism:
“She just reached a point where she needs a minute. She is not having a breakdown,” the source said. “She wants to be the healthiest that she can be and this means taking a little break. But she is fine. She is OK.”
If you ask me, the anonymous source doth protest too much. Look, I don’t want Selena Gomez to be having a breakdown. I would prefer that this source’s comments were true, but unfortunately I just don’t see how a singer could get away with canceling a tour on such short notice simply because she needs some time to relax.
According to Selena’s Instagram, however, she is just taking some time to relax. Specifically to thoughtfully stare out windows and smell babies’ heads. Selena captioned the above photo of herself with a baby — likely her half sister Gracie — with the following:
“I’m the happiest I’ve been in a while.. So blessed and thankful for the future, for release and to finally be happy for those I loved..”
I hope window-staring and baby-holding is really all you needed, Selena. But maybe next time you should finish your promised tour first.
