Legend has it that every time Lorde opens her mouth and talks about her image and her work, a teenage girl struggling to fit in grows a pair of wings. Or more accurately and more politically incorrectly, a pair of balls. When doing a Reddit AMA yesterday, user saigezabarte asked her, “Are you confident in your stage performance? I know people have criticized the way you perform, how do you respond to that?”
And she (obviously) responded perfectly. In fact, far more perfectly than any 16-year-old should be able to respond.
“i know when i’m onstage, i don’t think about how it looks, i just concentrate on really feeling what i hear. but i totally know i look like gollum when i perform, so it’s cool.”
See what she did there? She said that her music’s more important than her appearance, but she’s not unaware of what she looks like when she’s singing. She’s not going to sit there and condescend to her fans and pretend like she’s oblivious to her looks. It’s a fact that people make funny faces when they sing. Also when they cry, when they run and really when they do anything that doesn’t involve sitting completely still. To be alive is to be awkward. While most pop stars go out of their way to manipulate us into thinking that they’re perfect while simultaneously pretending that’s not at all what they’re doing, it’s extremely refreshing to see one who’s self aware. It makes me hopeful that our next generation of pop stars will see the positive reaction Lorde gets from her honesty and follow in her footsteps. It might help other teenage girls — and women who still feel as awkward as a teenage girl — realize that celebrities are far from perfect. Which makes them much more like us than all their canned quotes about being normal-homebody-I-was-a-high-school-misfit quotes combined.
