Despite being a global superstar at 21-years-old, there’s something about Demi Lovato that makes her seem so incredibly real. And not in the way that Jennifer Lawrence seems real. But in the way that you feel like she’s actually experienced the hardships of life. That money and fame didn’t protect her in the way it protects other celebrities. Sure it’s cushioned her fall, but still there’s something really raw about her that comes through in all her interviews — as well as in her music. Her latest interview with Access Hollywood’s Kit Hoover’s no exception.
She speaks to Kit about her cocaine addiction and how extreme it got at one point. Despite having a sober coach with her 24/7, she still managed to smuggle drugs onto planes and do them in the bathroom. At one point, things go so bad that she couldn’t go more than an hour without doing cocaine. An hour! For those of you who struggle with time, let me tell that’s a TON of drugs.
While we could talk about the obviously severity of her addiction for hours, I think the important thing to focus on is that she’s in recovery at 21. Rather than sink any deeper into that dark hole of despair, she managed to to pull herself out and get help at a really young age. Whether or not you like her voice or you like her songs, you have to recognize that this alone makes her a role model worthy of recognition.
Throw in the fact that she continues to be candid about her experience and what it was like and she’s worthy of so much more than we give her. Unlike so many other young celebrities out there who are working to make a name for themselves, she’s working to make a difference in young people’s lives. It’s so impressive that I can’t help but shed my cynical suit of armor and feel genuinely happy for all that she’s accomplished so far.
