Hollywood Has Cast Its Wonder Woman, And I Can Smell The Backlash From A Mile Away

Gal Gadot Los Angeles Riddick premiere August 2013

Hollywood might not be ready to give Wonder Woman a full movie of her own, but they’re apparently ready to finally put her on the big screen in a smaller role, which I guess is a start. Actress Gal Gadot has been cast as Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman. Yes, that’s the movie Ben Affleck is starring in. Sorry to bring that up again if you were one of those people who drew up petitions about it. Speaking of petitions, I can already feel one coming on about this casting.

Gadot is best known for her role as Gisele Harrabo in the Fast and Furious franchise. In a statement, director Zack Snyder explained the reasoning behind the casting: “Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”

I’ve never seen any of Gal Gadot’s performances, so I can’t personally give an opinion about how well she’ll inhabit the character. But I do know what Wonder Woman looks like. I also know how much people on the Internet like judging things. So as soon as I saw Gadot’s photograph on the Entertainment Weekly article where I read the news, I knew what I would find in the comments section.

Some people are not happy about Gal Gadot’s body type. That extends beyond just comments sections, as a Twitter search for “Wonder Woman” reveals similar results.

Obviously if you haven’t seen any of her performances, appearance is all you have to go by, and she is quite thin and delicate-looking. And to be fair, the comments aren’t overwhelmingly negative. But I think it’s important to take a step back and think about what we’re getting worked up about before we take this too far.

Based on the comments we got from fans when we gave suggestions for who could take on the role, it would be extremely difficult to please people no matter who was chosen. But let’s remember that A.) Gadot will probably go through a lot of intense training just like male superheroes do, B.) Her body doesn’t look much different from Lynda Carter’s when she played Wonder Woman, C.) Gadot was in the Israeli Army for two years and has starred in action movies, and D.) The filmmakers cast her for a reason. If you want to criticize her acting, fine. But people didn’t even like Man of Steel in the first place.

I think the bigger complaint we should have is why it’s taken so long to get Wonder Woman onto the big screen in the first place, and why it’s still taking so long to actually get her a feature-length film of her own. We can reboot the Batman franchise a million times with countless different actors but we can’t try out a Wonder Woman feature? Here’s hoping this makes Hollywood reconsider whatever it has against female superheroes.

Yeah when people start complaining about body type I just role my eyes. Do you think Christian bale and Hugh jackman are always so ripped? No they aren’t they go through intense training like I’m sure Gal will do. They also apparently forgot that Linda Hamilton is really petite but just look at her arms in Terminator 2 because of how hard she trained.
