I’m still struggling with the fact that December has already decided to get here, but it’s about time we all accept it, I guess. With the last month of the year comes all kinds of reflection on the months that were, and one of the most anticipated year-end compilations is DJ Earworm’s annual United State of Pop mashup, using 25 of the year’s most popular songs. He just released his 2013 edition, named “Living the Fantasy,” and he’s really living up to his name. Not only have you probably had a lot of these songs stuck in your head this year already, but you’re going to have this mashup stuck in your head for the rest of the day — most likely because you’ll be listening to it on repeat that whole time.
DJ Earworm (whose real name is Jordan Roseman) told Billboard of his seventh mashup, “It’s a little darker-themed, I think.” He decided to use the instrumental of Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child” to make sure the video wasn’t completely devoid of uptempo parts. Earworm explains that ballads seem to have become more popular, and that “even the dance music that is there is more gentle.”
This mashup features all the usual suspects, from Rihanna to Justin Timberlake to Lorde to Miley Cyrus to Taylor Swift — you get the idea. What’s great about the project is that it doesn’t just mash up the songs; it also mashes up the music videos that go along with the songs. It’s like all these popular artists got together to star in one big music video for a collaborative song. So while you’re keeping this mashup going in your head today, you can imagine Macklemore and P!nk and Bruno Mars and Florida Georgia Line all hanging out as brunch buddies. If that’s not the main purpose of a mashup, I don’t know what is.
