Ron Burgundy Anchors A Real Newscast In North Dakota, And I’m Officially Tired Of Him

Ron Burgundy regret this decision

Saturday night, viewers of North Dakota’s KX News were treated to a news broadcast co-anchored by Ron Burgundy himself, aka Will Ferrell playing his Anchorman character to promote the upcoming sequel Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. I don’t know about you, but I’m a little Burgundied out these past few months, and this appearance isn’t doing much to remedy that.

I’m sure it was really exciting for viewers of KX News to see a famous comedian in character hosting their news program. Hell, I get intrigued when my local news gets an interview with a C-list celeb, let alone someone like Will Ferrell. But does anyone else think that this whole “staying in character and showing up every time we turn around” shtick is getting old?

Ron Burgundy has shown up on talk shows, in online videos, and in those Dodge Durango commercials (Vulture has a nice compilation of his various appearances). He’s even hosting ESPN’s SportsCenter this Thursday. I don’t remember the last time I saw Will Ferrell as himself. It got old when Sacha Baron Cohen did it, and it’s getting old here. Especially when it leads to an appearance as awkward as this one. I couldn’t bear to sit through the entire broadcast, but if you’re up for it, you can watch it here. Otherwise check out some highlights below.

Full disclosure, I have actually never seen the original Anchorman in its entirety. You might be thinking I have no right to complain if I haven’t even seen the source material, but I think it actually adds to my argument. I haven’t even seen the movie and I still feel like I’ve witnessed too much of Ron Burgundy. It certainly isn’t making me want to go see more of him when the sequel comes out. And that’s kind of the opposite of what a press tour is supposed to do, right? Instead of just appealing to die-hard Anchorman fans who’ll laugh at anything Ron Burgundy says, maybe avoid overexposure and get people unfamiliar with the franchise just interested enough to want to see more.

A little Ron Burgundy goes a long way. A lot of Ron Burgundy makes me wish to never hear the words “stay classy” ever again for the rest of my life. Even the presence of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey isn’t enough to get me into the theater.

I’m with you. I’ve never seen the original move in it’s entirety. It was too obnoxious to finish. I’m a big fan of Will Ferrell, but this character is lame. Too bad there’s a sequel and too bad it won’t just go away altogether.

He’s not the kind of character who holds up well over dozens of appearances.
