In the world of Hollywood, I feel like most of the time, people end up naturally pairing off into couples with approximately the same level of attractiveness between them. I’m thinking about people like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, or Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, or Will Smith and Jada Pinkett. Pretty people tend to seek out pretty people, and since Hollywood contains an almost unlimited supply of those things, it all usually works out exactly as you’d expect.
But don’t rule out the power of personality, guys, because if you take a quick glance at some of the relationships out there, there are actually quite a few normal-looking guys with a strong sense of humor who wrangled themselves top-shelf, eleven-out-of-ten, glamazons. Who also happen to have pretty good personalities. Because life isn’t fair.
But just because it’s nice to see situations where love conquers all and people don’t get hung up on a seven being with a seven or a ten being with a ten or whatever, here are thirteen examples of imbalanced Hollywood couples where the guy really lucked out and traded up in the looks department. (And probably knows it, too.)
1. Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde
Don’t get me wrong, Jason is in no way an unattractive guy. There’s just absolutely no way he could pull someone as drop-dead gorgeous as Olivia without a sterling silver personality. That’s not how she sees it, though:
“He was so handsome, and he could dance. I thought, ‘He won’t be interested in me; I’m not a contender. He was so cool, so funny – I was such a fan of his and had always fancied his speed and his intelligence. I thought, ‘I’m not beautiful enough or his type.’”
Welp. Guess it all works out that they’re engaged and expecting a baby, then.
2. Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor
I’m telling you guys — every parent should be raising their son to go into comedy, because that seems to be how you end up with a beautiful, talented wife who in any other field would be totally out of your league. Ben and Christine met while filming a pilot that never ended up being broadcast, and have been married since 2000 with two kids.
3. Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann
Annnnd speaking of the ‘Frat Pack’, Judd Apatow and his wife Leslie Mann! They met on the set of The Cable Guy, which Leslie starred in and Judd produced, and he says it was ‘love at first sight’. Yeah, I bet — she’s effing gorgeous. But apparently she doesn’t mind the imbalance, because the two of them have been married since 1997 and have two daughters, Maude and Iris Apatow.
4. Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell
I absolutely love this pair of knuckleheads, so please don’t get me wrong when I say that Kristen is the more attractive of the two. Especially because Dax agrees with me, telling People in 2012:
“If Brad Pitt gets Kristen Bell, it’s like, ‘Well, of course he did. With me, it should be, ‘Oh good, a normal-looking guy got her. Maybe I’ll get me a Kristen Bell.’ But guys hate my guts for always dating women I have no right to be with.”
I mean, you can understand why. Look at the girl.
5. Geoffrey Arend and Christina Hendricks
These two represent such a victory for confidence, you guys! They met when Christina’s Mad Men costar Vincent Kartheiser introduced them, and Christina later said about the meeting:
‘Geoffrey walked in and I was like, ‘Who is this guy?’ He had amazing hair and was all dishevelled – he was running late and everyone was waiting for him. He just came in with this very high energy. He was just charming, funny and very magnetic. I got his number that night under the pretence of, “We could just be friends.” And of course I immediately went home and Googled him.’
Annnnd now they’re married, so COME INTO ROOMS CONFIDENTLY EVERYONE. From now on.
