While all you Americans spent last night getting schwasted, the fine people of Britain gathered for the 2013 Britannia Awards. In Beverly Hills. I know, it’s confusing. But BAFTA LA throws this shindig together every year, so let’s just go with it and pretend that it makes sense. Mostly because we need to talk about the prank that Sacha Baron Cohen pulled while there. And yes, even though it’s a prank, it’s the best thing you’ll watch tonight. I’m saying that as someone who sat stone faced through The Dictator.
So let me fill you in on what you’re about to see. Sacha Baron Cohen came to the “Britannia Awards” stage to receive an award for excellence in comedy. While up there, Grace Collington, the oldest living actress to have worked with Charlie Chaplin, presented Sacha Baron Cohen with a cane. I guess because Charlie Chaplin had a cane fetish and all that silent film jazz. Sacha then proceeded to accidentally push Old Mrs. Collington off the stage and onto her face — resulting in her immediate death.
Except, psych, it’s allllll a giant prank that was planned in advance. Sacha even had a nice little speech prepared for this moment. According to Deadline, it went like this.
“Grace Collington is the oldest, sorry, was the oldest… I dedicate my award to her. It’s obviously a tragedy, but on the bright side what a great way to go. She’ll probably make the Oscars In Memoriam section… Anyway tonight is not about her, it’s about me.”
As much as I’m over Sacha Baron Cohen, this video still made me gasp aloud. Not only because a lady flies off the stage in a wheelchair, but also because it turned my crush on the British into a full blown obsession. When was the last time someone at the Oscars had a sense of humor?
