Listen up, everybody: Britney Spears has released the second single from her upcoming album Britney Jean. The new song is called “Perfume,” and it’s just as lackluster as “Work Bitch.”
The song is a ballad about a cheating lover, in which Britney wonders whether her man is cheating on her or if she’s just paranoid. You can see the full lyrics here, but here are a few samples for your reading pleasure:
I want to believe
It’s just you and me
Sometimes it feels like there’s three
of us in here baby
So I, wait for you to call
And I try to act natural
have you been thinking ’bout her or about me
And while I wait I put on my perfume, yeah I want it all over you
I gotta mark my territory
A girl’s just got to mark her territory. You know.
I can’t help but be a critic – I think Britney’s ballad singing peaked with “Email My Heart.” But I’m starting to wonder if this song is just a marketing ploy to promote Britney’s fragrances. You know, the ones with the dramatic commercials. Because when you google “Britney Spears Perfume” all that comes up is information on how to buy her perfumes. So this is either a really great marketing plan or a really bad one, depending on how you look at it: great advertising for her perfumes, bad advertising for the song.
But on a serious note, I hope Brit Brit is ok. Even though she’s past her performing prime, I still have a lot of love in my heart for Britney. Her new album is supposedly inspired by her breakup with Jason Trawick, and if that’s the case, it sounds like maybe he cheated on her. Or she was just really paranoid that he was cheating. Either way, sad. I hope she’s doing ok, because they seemed really happy together. Did he cheat on you, Britney? Do you want me to beat him up for you?
Listen to the single see for yourself: perfume ad or tragic love song?
