This weekend Edward Norton hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time and made me laugh more than I expected. He did spot-on impressions and gave his each sketch everything he had. It made me realize that there are probably dozens of celebrities out there with crazy comedy skills who have yet to host SNL because the show keeps choosing people who’ve hosted before or casting mediocre to terrible people who will get them high ratings.
If you can believe it, these seventeen celebrities have not hosted SNL. Not even once. There’s no guarantee that they all would even want to host, but they absolutely should. Because I said so. Listen up, Lorne Michaels.
1. Sandra Bullock
I think I speak for everyone when I say, “WTF?!” Sandra Bullock’s absence from this show is an absolute travesty. She’s so likeable and funny I just assumed she had already hosted, but nope. This needs to be remedied immediately.
2. Anderson Cooper
This one’s a no brainer. Anderson has proven himself to be amazingly funny and just an all-around goofball. Fellow “OMG, he’s funny?!” guy Brian Williams hosted the show. Why no Anderson?
3. Mila Kunis
Mila actually told Esquire that she’s afraid of messing up SNL. But she ended by saying, “Not to say I am never going to do it.” So there’s still hope! Come on, Mila. Fellow girl crushes Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence have none it. You can too!
4. Al Roker
Al has been one of the funniest — if not the funniest — parts of The Today Show for a while, and his new Vine from the Drake concert he attended this weekend makes me even more curious to see how he’d handle a hosting gig.
5. Ryan Gosling
Our dear Gosling has said he’s “too scared” to do the show, something which made his Crazy Stupid Love co-star Emma Stone very disappointed. She said in an interview, “It makes me so mad. He would be so great on that show.” Listen to Emma, Ryan!
6. Anna Kendrick
Surely Anna would be able to translate her perfect Twitter voice into a successful sketch show performance. Plus, she can sing!
7. Brad Pitt
I’m not super invested in whether or not Brad Pitt hosts the show, but the fact that he never has really intrigues me. He just seems like the kind of guy who would have checked that off his bucket list like 20 years ago. He’s done his fair share of comedic roles, so I have faith in him.
8. Will Arnett
Jason Bateman and Michael Cera are the only Arrested Development cast members who’ve hosted the show. I think any of the other actors would be great, but Will Arnett seems like the best choice to start off with. It’s surprising he’s never been on, considering he was married to Amy Poehler.
9. Chloe Grace Moretz
Sure, she’s only 16, but the show’s had plenty of youngsters host, including 7-year-old Drew Barrymore, so this would be fine. Chloe was hilarious on 30 Rock, and on top of that she has the professionalism of a 40-year-old.
10. Adam Scott
Adam’s great at playing the straight man, but I have a feeling he’d pull out all the stops for an SNL gig. His onscreen wife Amy Poehler should be able to arrange it.
11. Lena Dunham
I’m decidedly not a fan of Lena Dunham, but I’m honestly shocked this hasn’t happened yet. As much as I roll my eyes at her, I’m interested to see how she’d do.
12. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp’s entire career is like one long episode of Saturday Night Live, with character after crazy character, and even recurring ones like Captain Jack Sparrow. Why not just transplant it to live TV?
13. Aubrey Plaza
I’m a little wary about this, since Aubrey’s so well-known for her deadpan delivery that she might not be able to pull off the more high-energy characters. That’s why I vote that she and BFF Anna Kendrick host together. And maybe I can be there to hang out with them. And it’s not so much SNL as it is brunch.
14. Benedict Cumberbatch
This would be so good! He’s got incredibly charisma, he does impressions, and he’s delightful in interviews. Make this happen, SNL!
15. John Stamos
How adorable would Uncle Jesse be as a host? Answer: the adorablest.
16. Kristen Bell
How how how has this not happened yet? She’s got Frozen and the Veronica Mars movie coming up, so there are two perfectly good reasons for her to be on. Or just have her host whenever, since that’s what’s been happening this season anyway.
17. Josh Groban
Initially Josh Groban seemed like the kind of boring guy who could never pull off comedy, because his music isn’t exactly hip. But he’s proven, on Twitter and during appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, that he has a great sense of humor. He could totally pull double duty as host and musical guest.
