If Taylor Swift was a mad scientist, I still don’t think she would do as good a job crafting a mini-version of herself in a lab than she’s doing with Hailee Steinfeld in her real life. In case you’re not aware, the two of them are improbable best friends, especially given that Taylor is twenty-three and Hailee is sixteen. I don’t know how these two even met, but apparently they’re inseparable somehow, dressing up in matching outfits for structured hang-out sessions and whispering secrets in each others ears at sleepovers. Aka it’s the real deal.
And up until now, I thought this friendship was mostly a frothy confection whipped up inside Taylor’s own head, because I never heard Hailee talk about it. But that ends today, because we have our first proof that Hailee is absorbing Swiftiness at an alarming rate. Here are the answers she gave to People Magazine for their One Last Thing segment.
“I recently went to Rhode Island with a couple of girlfriends. We walked on the beach, listened to music, did arts and crafts and baked Rice Krispies treats. Just random and spontaneous things.”
Random and spontaneous in the same sentence as arts and crafts? This reeks of Swift. I sense her immaculate fingerprints all over it. And it gets worse. When asked what the last concert she attended was, she says:
“My friend Taylor Swift’s. We connected a few years ago; she’s like a big sister to me. She’s the best listener. I feel like I can call or text her wherever she is in the world and she’ll always be there.”
How did this happen? Can someone explain this to me? The world is challenging enough for me to understand with only one Taylor Swift in it; I don’t know if I could handle a second. This time next year we’ll all be getting death threats from Swifties and Steinies both, and I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely not ready for that.
