So you still haven’t come up with a Halloween costume, eh? Well, if you don’t have a lot of time to spare, I’ll direct you to our last-minute costume ideas. If, however, you’re feeling a little ambitious and have resolved to make this Halloween your best ever, please refer to the pop culture-inspired ideas below. These are great costumes for people who really want to put on a show and turn All Hallows’ Eve into a performance. There will be quite a few costume changes required of you, but it’ll be so worth it when everyone applauds how awesome you are.
1. The Stages of Miley Cyrus’s Career
We’ve already established that there will be a lot of Miley Cyrus costumes this year. Some groups might even dress up as the stages of her career. But how many people will wear all the stages themselves? Not many, probably. Just make sure the foam finger doesn’t stick out of your garment bag and spoil the surprise.
2. Mrs. Doubtfire/Daniel Hillard
Some fun couples or best friends might do this, but what it’s so much more fun (and authentic) if one person plays both sides of the character. Channel your inner nervous dad and frantically switch between costumes every few minutes, hoping no one notices. Bonus points if you do the cake icing bit.
3. Rihanna’s Hairstyles
Step one: research Rihanna’s many hairstyles. Step two: find a friend who makes fabulous wigs. Step three: wear a different wig every fifteen minutes of the party. Naturally you should also dress like Rihanna. So wear a bra with a sleeping bag or something.
4. Benjamin Button
You can go very literal and dress like Brad Pitt does in the movie, or you can just apply the aging backwards theme to yourself, starting as a very old person and ending as a diaper-wearing baby. The guests won’t know what hit them.
5. The Hosts of The Tonight Show
If you’re really ambitious, you can go all the way back to the beginning and channel hosts like Steve Allen and Johnny Carson, or you can go the easier route and just start with Jay Leno. Be sure to change into Conan O’Brien for only a couple of minutes before immediately becoming Jay Leno again. Sure, you bought that red wig only to wear it for a brief period, but it’s funny because it’s true, okay?!
6. Tatiana Maslany on Orphan Black

Tatiana Maslany plays various very different clones on this awesome sci-fi show. Impress everyone with your great taste in TV and your acting ability by transforming into the various characters. Bonus points if you dress as one of the clones impersonating another clone, as happens often on this show.
7. Lady Gaga’s VMAs Performance
This is a very literal interpretation of the costume change theme, since Gaga’s performance involved multiple clothing changes in just a few minutes. If you need some inspiration, just watch how this guy pulled it off in his car.
8. Ariel in The Little Mermaid
(Photo: Disney via IMDb)
Talk about the definition of a dramatic transformation. Start the party with a fish tail and a shell bra, then take off the tail, wrap a sail around yourself and stumble around for a while, eventually changing back into a mermaid and then (SPOILER ALERT) into a princess in a wedding dress.
9. Justin Bieber’s Tattoos
This one’s only okay if you’re willing to draw all over your arm the whole evening. Just dress like Justin Bieber in a wife beater and some diaper pants, then add another ridiculous fake tattoo (or real one, if you’re edgy) to your left arm every half hour. This costume’s very low maintenance, even though its inspiration isn’t.
10. A Real Housewife on Vacation
(Photo: Isabella Vosmikova/IMDb)
These ladies change their clothes on vacation more often than me on Thanksgiving (food spills). Just prepare a bunch of really flashy expensive-looking outfits — from a bikini to a mini-dress — and wear them all with a longe blonde wig. People will understand eventually.
