I don’t know how this happened, but somehow I just got a little excited for season three of Girls. I guess it’s not that insane, considering I really enjoyed the first season, but round two put such a bad taste in my mouth that I didn’t think I could ever look at a naked girl eating a cake on a toilet ever again without rolling my eyes. But here’s that twinge-y feeling of looking forward to something back again, against all odds.
What happened was this — I just watched a kind of behind-the-scenes promo thing that was released to hype up the season premiere on January 12th, 2014, and I fell back in like with all the things I loved about the show in the first place. Maybe it was because each actress only got about thirty seconds to catch the audience up to what her character was up to, but there were refreshingly few Major Issues, y’know?
And maybe that tricksy Lena Dunham has gotten me again and season three will be a redo of season two with all the divorces, disappearances, nudity, bad sex, betrayal, and bafflingly bad decisions crammed it into an hour long episode every week. But it’s just as likely I guess that she could have finally settled into her role as a showrunner, and she’s ready to showcase something a little less melodramatic. Here’s hoping, and I’ll see you on January 12th at 10:00pm on HBO.
