You’ve really got to hand it to Rihanna, you guys. While you’re busy using your Instagram for regular things like posting pictures of your eggs benedict through a haze of mimosas at brunch or humblebragging about your #bestboyfriendever, Rihanna is taking social media to a whole ‘nother level.
She used to use it to fuel speculation about her on-again-off-again relationship with Chris Brown, each of them posting photos to their own personal accounts with the same patterned sheets in them, but still insisting that they’re ‘just friends’. Then for a while she’d use it to show everyone how cool and naked she could be, but that’s totally passe now. (Someone tell Shia LaBeouf.) And of course it’s a constant tool that she uses to document her obsession with marijuana, but lately she’s really kicked it up a notch.
As you may recall, last month Thai authorities were able to use her Instagram to get somebody arrested, and this past weekend, it was enough to almost get RiRi in some trouble herself in Abu Dhabi. Even though she was fully clothed for once in her ever-loving life — with hair covered and everything! — turns out that you still need to ask permission before taking fashion shots of yourself in a holy place.
She posted a series of photos to Instagram in which she’s posing in the courtyard of a mosque, and in some she’s gone so far as to lie down on the ground with her limbs artfully arrayed around her. Okay girl. Nice try with wearing more clothes, but this is perhaps not the most tasteful place to stage a photo shoot — even if it’s only vaguely sensual – considering the restrictions placed on Muslim countries, and specifically in their holy places. In a statement given by the mosque:
“She was asked to leave before entering the actual mosque, (she was in the courtyard taking pictures) after taking some photos that did not fit within the rules and regulations set out to preserve the sacredness of the center.”
I mean yeah, touche. They’re beautiful photos, I’ll grant you, but you have to have some awareness of your surroundings and show respect to the country hosting you. Even while you shine bright like a diamond or whatever.
I FOUND CLOTHES IN A HOLY PLACE. I FOUND CLOTHES IN A HOOOOLLEEEEEE PLACE.
I’m done. I apologize.
