If you woke up this morning looking for an excuse to talk about the “very special episodes” of the ’90s all day long, then you’re in luck! Last night Jessie Spano (legally known around town as Elizabeth Berkley) recreated her infamous “I’m so excited, I’m so excited, I’m so, so scared” scene from Saved by the Bell on Dancing With the Stars. Context tells me that the Bayside High alum’s currently competing on this season of the show. But I couldn’t tell you anymore about that situation than that, so seriously guys, no questions about dance or stars or even the word with.
Let’s instead just use this dance as an excuse to talk about Saved by the Bell. Specifically Jessie Spano….and how I identified way too much with her stress as a 7-year-old. I remember watching this episode and being like, “I feel you girl, I got a diorama due tomorrow and it’s not getting done before bedtime unless I snort this entire bottle of Flintstones vitamins.” I don’t remember ever judging her for downing those caffeine pills, not when everything that mattered was at stake. Not when the future careers of the Hot Sundae group depended on her nailing that performance. Not when those pills were clearly the only thing that could help her to succeed in school and in show business.
All these years later, my opinion remains the same, Jessie needed those pills — and who was Zack Morris to ride into her bedroom on his self-righteous high horse and take them from her? I know the kid had a cell phone and I know he had the power to stop time, but that didn’t give him the right to stop Jessie from self-medicating. But that’s just my opinion. Watch the video below and tell me if you feel the same.
