Every now and then there’s a trend that just seems so horribly wrong that you think, “Holy poop, there is no way that could ever look good.” And then, you see it and see it and see it and suddenly you’re like, “I do need sneaker wedges! In every colorway!”
One current trend that’s having this effect on our senses is overalls. Overalls remind people of a variety of things– farmers, the ’90s, how they owned three pairs of short-alls as a kid and loved wearing them with one clasp unhooked. Over the past couple of years, they’ve made a slow comeback that’s recently been building a lot of steam. And they have had exactly the mixed results you might expect. A lot of people still look like fools in them, but some people, some magical, mystical people, are actually able to pull them off. I’m sure that personally I would look like a 10-year-old time traveler from 1996, but the celeb ladies below are making some convincing arguments for trying them out.
Something interesting I found while looking up overall wearers is that a lot of them are repeat offenders. Overalls seem to be an addiction where if you buy one, you just have to have more. Alexa Chung here has been pictured wearing around a dozen. She LOVES them. And she can pull them off because she’s Alexa Chung. Also it helps that she’s wearing Chanel flats and a Louis Vuitton bag (not farmer-y) and cool sunglasses (not ten-year-old-ish).
This one is the most impressive because Bella Thorne, of Disney Channel fame, is wearing overalls in mustard yellow corduroy and somehow it looks great. These ones work because the leg is slim and cropped rather than baggy. This picture makes me feel like I want mustard yellow corduroy overalls and I would have never expected that. Ever.
Of course Rihanna is here and I’m also not surprised that she’s doing the one-shoulder thing. Like Bella’s, these have a skinny leg and the styling is key. Farmers do not wear pointy-toed stilettos and the fact that the dungarees are hidden some with the jacket makes them more subtle instead of the only thing you focus on. They don’t scream, “I’M WEARING OVERALLS!!! OVERALLS!!!”
On the other hand, you might want to let them speak for themselves. Here’s a wide-legged example courtesy of Liv Tyler. These overalls are taking center stage while the rest of the outfit is pretty minimal. (Unlike that of the woman standing next to her. What’s going on there?) Liv looks like that friend who might do things like go to farmers markets (not farms!) to pick up some locally-sourced, organic ingredients to use for her homemade sangria. And you’d be like, “Oh, you! You’re so overly into trends, but in a chill way so that I still love and accept you.”
So the snark came out some towards the end there, and I might have to pass of this trend myself, but I do think these gals are pulling it off nicely. What do you think? Is it a no go or are you wearing overalls as you read this and feeling pretty damn good about yourself?
