I have this problem where I assume that everyone is exactly like me (read: self-centeredness), so if I hear an actor speaking with an American accent in a movie, I take that at face value and assume that’s what they are.
But a surprising amount of the time, these people are tricksing with me, and they’re not American after all. But I’ve just gotten so used to seeing them fake it for the movies that by the time I hear their real voices, it’s super weird and jarring. And I would never want you to feel weird or jarred, so I put together a list of all the people who continually fool me, in hopes that they don’t manage to do the same thing to you.
1. Sam Palladio
If you watch Nashville, you recognize Sam as Gunnar, who actually has a Southern accent on the show. But in real life, he’s British, as Jenni learned when she grudgingly went to see Runner Runner.
2. Clare Bowen
Another Nashville actor, Clare’s character Scarlet O’Connor also speaks with a Southern accent on the show, but she’s actually Australian in real life.
3. Hugh Laurie
Although he played Dr. Gregory House on House for eight seasons, Hugh is actually British, and just does a killer American accent. Like, one of the best in the business.
4. Christian Bale
Christian is some kind of vocal shapeshifter; I feel like I’ve never heard him do the same voice twice. He’s skilled in all manner of dialects, but he’s originally from Wales.
5. Colin Farrell
Honestly, this one gets me every time. Colin was born in Dublin, Ireland, but I always expect him to be American.
6. Toni Collette
I heard Toni out of her American accent for the first time in Enough Said and it was SO JARRING. She’s from Australia, but has hidden her accent in so many roles that I had no idea.
7. James McAvoy
Hello love of my life who I developed an affection for in Penelope…and then saw in Atonement and was like, “Who what where Scottish accent why?”
8. Daniel Day Lewis
Another accent magician, DDL is so dedicated to his craft that he does all the press for a movie in the same dialect that he used for said movie. But at the end of the day, he’s from London. Doesn’t mean I have any idea what his real voice sounds like.
9. Russell Crowe
Russell ends up doing mostly movies in which he has an American accent or at most a British accent, but he’s originally from New Zealand.
10. Kate Winslet
For a looooong time after I saw Titanic, I had absolutely no idea that Kate was British. But even now that I do, most of her characters have American accents, so it’s easy to forget.
11. Hugh Jackman
Something about Hugh playing Wolverine makes me forget that he’s originally from Australia. I gues X Men just feel inherently American to me.
12. Damian Lewis
I haven’t seen Homeland myself, but watching clips from it, I didn’t believe someone when they told me Damien was British. But apparently even he finds the American accent hard to maintain, because he refuses to drop it on-set, even when he’s not filming.
13. Robert Pattinson
I’m ashamed to even hear myself say this, but I got so used to hearing R-Pattz’s voice in the Twilight movies that now every time I hear his real British dialect.
14. Cate Blanchett
Cate has done so many different dialects in her films that when she went back to her native Australian accent for Little Fish, she actually had to research it ‘more painstakingly than usual’ to make sure she got it right. Makes me feel a little better about forgetting where she’s from.
15. Ed Westwick
Gossip Girl was the first thing I ever saw Ed in, so imagine my surprise when he turned out to be British. My jangled nerves may never recover.
16. Andrew Garfield
How dare you, Andrew? How dare you trick me into thinking you speak with an American accent when actually you have a British one. Does Emma Stone know about this?!?
17. Carey Mulligan
Carey does use her own native British accent quite a bit, but she jumbles so many other dialects in there as well that I get all confused and jumbled up!
18. Alan Cumming
After watching Alan as Eli Gold on The Good Wife every week, being reminded that he was born and raised in Scotland really rocked my world.
