Maybe I should take the cynical route every week when it comes to SNL expectations, because I was genuinely expecting this week’s show to be awful. Or at the very least, difficult to sit through due to Miley Cyrus overload, as she was the host and the musical guest. What really threw me for a loop here — and may the universe not strike me dead for saying this — was to laugh more out loud this week than I did last week, when my heart/soul/inspiration/secret BFF Tina Fey hosted.
There was a lot more to twerk with this week, you know? So many things to parody! And parody they did. Here are the five best sketches from last night’s show.
1. We Did Stop
This is probably the sketch everyone will be talking about most. It takes a lot for me to feel like SNL “pushed the envelope” because practically nothing makes me raise my eyebrows (I’m cold and dead inside), but this sketch was honestly kind of shocking. It was glorious. Taran Killam, you are my penguin.
2. 50 Shades of Grey Auditions
Bahahaha, you guys. I am a HUGE sucker for eating up the celebrity impersonation sketches, and I lapped this up like a tiny newborn kitten laps up a saucer of warm milk. Would have liked to see Aidy Bryant actually speak as Rebel Wilson, but everyone else was delightful. The Christoph Waltz impersonation was a bingo!
3. Cold Open: VMAs
Naturally, we couldn’t get through this entire episode without referencing the VMAs, so better to just get it out of the way early on. I loved what they did here mostly because I love Vanessa Bayer, who clearly loves doing Miley. I must admit, Miley was a good sport last night.
4. Miley Sex Tape
I think I’m really liking the new crew so far. They’re all white and 90% of them have penises, which is kind of a bummer for diversity. But they’re fun to watch. Even when they’re talking about sex with Miley Cyrus.
5. Piers Morgan Reviews Clinton Biopics
It’s exactly what it sounds like! I would like to see Kate McKinnon’s “Running Rodham” make a recurrence, please and thanks.
