A lot of celebrities out there are wealthy and privileged beyond our wildest dreams, that’s nothing new. I don’t care about the stories that revolve around what mansions they’re buying, how much Forbes says they’re worth, or what fashion shows they attended. I love love love, however, hearing about celebrities who have a heart and give back. The genuine stories. Sometimes it’s with very little fanfare, and sometimes it’s at events like Variety’s Power of Women luncheon, where we get to hear celebrities like Amy Poehler say things that make us fall deeper in
obsession love with her.
A whole slew of admirable, famous faces were honored yesterday for their philanthropic work and big hearts and there were a lot of great moments. But the moment that truly stood out to me (I teared up while reading it, and I never tear up because I’m a ride-or-die BitchBot) was Amy Poehler accepting her kudos for her work with Worldwide Orphans. She started by asking the audience to close their eyes and think of a time from their childhoods when they felt warm and loved:
“Open your eyes and realize that there are so many children in the world who have nothing,” the Parks & Recreation star and mother of two said, choking up. “They have nothing. They have no one who lights up when they walk in a room, and no clothes, or safety, or food. And so who are we to be in this room, and be somebody living this life without helping them?”
Oh my God. OH MY GOD. I want to go walk around my neighborhood and start hugging children right now (Hey, I live in an underprivileged neighborhood and I don’t doubt some of these kids could use a hug and that’s the truth). I just love how real she is, and how easy it is to believe that she’s probably the greatest woman on earth and I want to spend the rest of my life with her. I know she’s not old enough but I think I want her to be my mom?
And to keep things light after making everyone cry, she ended her speech by telling everyone that “giving to charity is good for your skin and it makes your ass smaller.” Because she’s the best.
