Miley Cyrus is doing double duty on Saturday Night Live this weekend as the host and the musical artist. And I’ll be the first one to let you know that it’s not because she’s a talented performer with a flair for improv. It’s because she’s a scandal maker. And where scandal makers go, headlines follow. Lorne Michaels threw us a bone by giving us Tina Fey in the first episode. Now he’s throwing us a pooper scooper full of shit by sending Miley Cyrus onto that stage. But as a fellow media person, I understand. Sometimes I have to put the word “naked” in the URL to get clicks. Sometimes he has to put Miley Cyrus in the spotlight for 90 minutes to get viewers.
The good thing about Miley Cyrus is that she knows what people think about Miley Cyrus. Unlike her fellow host/performer Justin Bieber, she’s completely aware, and I believe in control, of her image. It’s very clear from her promotional video that she’ll be in on the joke. The question is whether or not that joke can last for 90 minutes. How many twerk puns and tongue references and wrecking ball riddles can they really make? I know, I know, the answer is that they can make a lot. If nothing else, SNL excels at taking a funny joke and repeating it so many times that you can’t remember why you ever liked it. But I suppose that’s what they have in common with Miley Cyrus. She excels at doing something shocking over and over and over again until the point that you can’t remember when she wasn’t shocking. In fact it’s to the point that I didn’t remember what she looked like with clothes on.
