Avril Lavigne has given us so many songs to belt out in our time of need (also known as a break-up). So it’s only fair that for her 29th birthday we rank her songs from the most moody emo ballad to those songs that you can almost smile to.
While Avril is probably a lot happier since Chad Kroeger put a ring on it, the girl really spoke to the emotional teenagers of the 2000s. She also made baggy camouflage pants with wife beaters and a tie a thing, but I really try not to hold that against her. Even if she does owe me major money for all those ties that I swore would be trendy forever.
1. “My Happy Ending”
The most melodramatic song about a break up ever? It really might be. But, it was obviously created with road-trip jam sessions in mind. Belting out this chorus makes it seem a little bit less depressing.
Most emo lyrics: “Thanks for watching as I fall. And letting me know we were done.”
If Marissa Cooper from The O.C. didn’t listen to this song everyday while picking out which Chanel bag to use that day, I’d be surprised. The perfect song for the moody teenager that nobody understands.
Most emo lyrics: “If you had your way, you’d just shut me up. Make me go away.”
3. “Don’t Tell Me”
This song is pretty dark. There’s assault, which is not fun for anyone…and the guy just sounds like an all around Chris Brown type. Happiness not detected.
Most emo lyrics: “Don’t think that your charm and the fact that your arm is now around my neck will get you in my pants.”
4. “Anything But Ordinary”
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have the lyrics: “This world is a beautiful accident turbulent succulent opulent permanent,” drawn on my school binders. Did I know what they meant when I was 12? Not at all. But I was “deep” and “moody” and wore ties because Avril told me to.
Most emo lyrics: “Somebody rip my heart out and leave me here to bleed. Is it enough to die? Somebody save my life.”
5. “Losing Grip”
The unofficial song for every high school girl in a relationship with that guy who just doesn’t care about her. Well, up until every Taylor Swift song came out. Later you realize that it’s because high school guys are incapable of caring about more than one thing at a time.
Most emo lyric: “Right now I feel invisible to you, like I’m not real. Didn’t you feel me lock my arms around you? Why’d you turn away?”
6. “When You’re Gone”
This song is pretty dramatic and depressing, but it seems like the guy always ends up coming back. So some happy points for that.
Most emo lyric: “And the days feel like years when I’m alone.”
No Avril Lavigne list is complete without the song that rocked a generation. Posers make Avril moody.
Most emo lyric: “Life’s like this. You fall and you crawl and you break.”
8. “I’m With You”
She might have started out by standing in the cold on a bridge in the middle of the night for who know what reason, but, silver lining, she goes home with somebody. She doesn’t know him though, so let’s hope this “somewhere new” is not the river underneath this bridge.
Most emo lyric: “I’m standing on a bridge. I’m waiting in the dark. I thought that you’d be here by now.”
9. “Sk8er Boi”
Even though the pretty cheerleader said “see ya l8ter,” everyone ends up happy! Except the pretty cheerleader and probably her baby. Not gr8t for them.
Most emo lyric: “Five years from now, she sits at home feeding the baby, she’s all alone.”
10. “Keep Holding On”
This song sounds more depressing than it is. At first you’re like, “What is this emo song?” But then, you listen to the lyrics and you realize that it’s actually a pretty uplifting message!
Most emo lyric: “Before it’s too late, this could all disappear.”
11. “What The Hell”
Very little emo is detected in this song. Instead of being upset about not being in a relationship, she’s just going to have fun. This is new!
Most emo lyric: “You never call or listen to me anyway. I’d rather rage than sit around and wait all day.”
12. “Here’s To Never Growing Up”
The fun continues. Avril has Peter Pan Syndrome, which left untreated will result in a complete lack of emo-ness.
Most emo lyric: “Got a bottle of whatever, but it’s getting us drunk.”
Guys, Avril isn’t even being moody about this guy. She’s a princess and she knows it and she’s just so sure she’s going to get the guy. This song is actually the opposite of emo. Instant ego booster? Singing along with this song really loudly while dancing around your apartment.
Most emo lyric: “I don’t want to hear you say her name ever again.”
