Public opinion is that Justin Bieber has, again and again, crossed the line. I am totally on board for putting him in his place. Which is what Zach Galifianakis strives to do in his interview with Bieber on Between Two Ferns. From the slightly offensive, like never wearing a shirt and only wearing pants that fall down, to the very offensive, like hot-boxing a plane and the infamous peeing-in-a-bucket incident, Bieber needs a reality check.
I was laughing aloud within the first 30 seconds of the video when Bieber's name shows up as "Justin Beevers." I may not be in middle school anymore but I'm not above a funny nickname insult. The interview continues with light jabs, like Galifianakis saying he's "never interviewed a seven-year-old before." After Bieber tries to fire a couple back, Galifianakis lays down the ground rules, saying his young punk attitude won't fly.
The jabs about Bieber's hairstyles escalate to Galifianakis raising his voice, berating Bieber for the bucket disaster. I'm all for it; someone needs to point out Bieber's piss-poor (in more ways than one) public antics. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter it goes a little too far, with Galifianakis removing his belt to hit Bieber. It's Between Two Ferns. It's at least somewhat staged, and both Galifianakis and Bieber surely knew the roles they had to fill before the interview. But physical violence? Really? We've condemned Bieber for starting a fight and to punish him we're what, showing him a taste of his own medicine? If the goal of Between Two Ferns is to be funny, which I think it is, it would be a lot funnier if Bieber could see how ridiculous he is by having Galifiankis go shirtless and spike his hair for the interview.
The end of the interview is saved by Galifianakis making a Nickelodeon reference that goes right over Bieber's 19-year-old head, then accidentally pouring slime on himself instead of Bieber. At that, I was laughing aloud again. Take out the cringe-inducing belt beating, and the interview is the perfect show of Galifinakis making us laugh at Bieber's expense, who could use a little humility.
