Hey guys, remember that time that I was speculating about who would take over the Weekend Update desk from Seth Meyers after he leaves Saturday Night Live in February 2014? Well let’s just forget that entire conversation took place, because I wasn’t even close to being right.
I was predicting that it’d be one of the more established cast members, and that it would probably be a man…but I was wrong on both counts, because it’s Cecily Strong. I think she’s hilarious and talented, and a great choice, I just didn’t think it would be her since last year was her very first season with the show. But I guess with so many cast members leaving this year — Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Jason Sudeikis – it’s kind of anybody’s game, and things are about to get all tore up.
Lorne Michaels says he chose Cecily because “from the first show, [she] was right there. She exploded.” He’s referring to the premiere episode of Season 38, in which Cecily played the girlfriend of that guy trying to distract her while she was getting the word out about voting. And after that, her character ‘The Girl You Wished You Hadn’t Started A Conversation With At A Party’ became a regular at the desk, and one of the best parts of the show.
Going forward, Cecily will apparently share the responsibilities with Seth until his departure in February, in hopes of easing the transition for the audience in an overhaul year. Then at that point, Lorne actually wants Seth to stay on, crazily enough, since he only hosts Late Night four nights a week. Good luck convincing Seth to do that, Lorne. He’s a newly-married guy and he’s been anchoring Weekend Update for seven seasons, not including this upcoming one. Get real.
Other cast changes include Tim Robinson being moved to the writing staff, writer Mike O’Brien being added to the performing cast, and the addition of five new performers — all of whom are white, and four of whom we already knew about. The newest cast member is Brooks Whelan, a stand-up performer from Los Angeles. It’s definitely an overhaul season, so I’m interested to see how stuff pans out. And hoping that just because she’s at the Weekend Update desk doesn’t mean that Cecily Strong won’t get used in the rest of the show. Because that’d be a damn shame.
