Dexter‘s Jennifer Carpenter And Michael C. Hall Are The Sweetest Divorced Celebrity Couple Ever

PaleyFest Fall Farewell Dexter

It’s hard to imagine lovely, positive feelings blooming from something as shitty as a divorce, but I think when two people are mature and self-aware like Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall are, anything is possible.  For the last few years, Dexter fans have been curious about what it must be like working side-by-side with your ex-spouse every single day, especially in the emotionally close kind of way these two do.  Rumors have floated around about Michael C. Hall allegedly having an affair with season 5 co-star Julia Stiles, blah blah blah.  Regardless of what really happened, divorce fucking sucks, but these two might have the best celebrity divorce of all time.

At the PaleyFest Dexter Fall Farewell event, Jennifer Carpenter opened up about everything fans and celebrity gossip mongers have wondered about for a long time (yes, I fall into both categories proudly):

“Our marriage didn’t look like anyone else’s, and our divorce didn’t either, so…I said it before, just because the marriage ended doesn’t mean the love did,” Carpenter replied, her voice breaking. “I’m crying. It’s an awkward thing to talk about your personal life in front of a bunch of strangers, but there’s nothing but love and respect between us. Nothing.”

I love that – “Our marriage didn’t look like anyone else’s.”  Damn straight, Jennifer!  Most married couples don’t work together at all, let alone portraying a semi-incestual brother and sister duo on the set of a series about vigilante serial killer. But seriously, I think this is a lovely thing to say about the whole thing.  Don’t forget, these two dealt with Hall’s cancer diagnosis in addition to everything else that must have been going on.  Kudos to them for not being petty, at least not publicly.  Some couples could learn a thing or two from them.

Hall even chimed in about it, not wanting to leave Jennifer high and dry on her tightrope of emotion (I’m just guessing):

“I would say the fact that Jennifer and I worked through whatever was going on with us personally the way we did and maintained telling the story was never in question,” he explained. “It was always what we needed or wanted to do.”

Since they’re so good at making us all feel better about things, I’m wondering if they’ll be able to talk me down from the ledge when the series ends for good next Sunday?

I doubt he cheated on her. It seems to me like the marriage just wasn’t working so they ended it. It’s not always about cheating, sometimes people just grow apart. Not to mention, if he did cheat on her with one of their former co-stars, I doubt that she would say anything positive about him, even if it were for the sake of the show. I think she just wouldn’t say anything. The tabloids always speculate a cheating scandal, especially if the actor or actress just appeared in a show or a movie with another actor or actress that’s not their husband or wife, and they had great chemistry. Sometimes it does happen, but most of the time that’s not the case.

Agreed. I think the struggle of his cancer diagnosis, working together so much and real life may have just made the marriage something they felt couldn’t survive. Cheating is always blamed for celebrity relationships failing, but they are humans too and sometimes things just don’t work out.
