Jennifer Hudson Has Never Had A Drink In Her Life, Which Means She Has No Excuse For Her 3 A.M Texts

Jennifer Hudson Do Something Awards July 31 2013 Los Angeles, California

Oh hello there person who’s made many drunken mistakes in her life! Were you perhaps looking for another reason to admire Jennifer Hudson? Yes? Great! I have just the doozy for you this morning. In a recent interview with Manhattan Magazine about her starring role in Winnie, Jennifer Hudson reveals that she’s never had a drink in her life. Or done drugs. Or said she loved a friend’s shirt in a way that made it clear that she really hated it. Okay, fine, I added that last one. But after reading this quote, I’m pretty sure it’s true. (And even more admirable after remembering that she survived a season working alongside Ryan Seacrest.)

“It terrified me to play that part because I had no reference point,” she told Manhattan magazine. “I’m 31 and I’ve never, ever, ever had a drink or done a drug in my entire life. I stick with Diet Coke and Crystal Light and water.”

I usually feel like a huge square because I’m the one person who actually bought into the “don’t do drug” lectures that happened during high school assemblies. Just like Hoku, they got me hook, line and sinker. I still have nightmares about that before-and-after photo of the meth face lady — which is probably the reason I keep putting off watching Breaking Bad. But now I’m feeling like I need to spend the rest of the day drink-shaming myself. If Jennifer Hudson can get through her life without knocking back a glass of wine or two (knocking back is the correct way to talk about wine, right?), I should be able to do the same. And then maybe, and guys I know this is a big maybe, I’ll be able to sing like her too. Fingers crossed that I’ll get cast in the Crushable production of Dreamgirls.
