Ah, celebrities. They lead such strange and otherworldly lives. They embark on countless forgotten relationships, and sometimes those relationships even go as far as marriage. Whereas other normal people have to worry about money and other peasant matters before they choose to get divorced, celebrities are like, “It’s been 72 days. I’m not really feeling this. Let’s stop. Where’d I leave my receipt?” And then they marry a few more people (usually someone more famous than their last spouse, let’s face it) until we can’t keep track anymore. There are plenty of early celebrity marriages we up and forgot about, either because they’ve become known for their newer nuptials or because they’ve kept to the single life so much we figured they’d never been tied down to begin with. These are their stories.
1. Jennifer Garner & Scott Foley
You might have forgotten this since Jennifer and Ben Affleck are America’s sweethearts, but Jen was married to actor Scott Foley from 2000 to 2004. The two met on the set of the TV series Felicity. Jen recently opened up to Allure about the divorce, saying, “We didn’t have a shot. He’s a really good guy, and we just imploded.” When Jen and Scott separated in 2003, Jen began dating her Alias co-star Michael Vartan, and then after that came Ben, and the rest is history.
2. Tom Cruise & Mimi Rogers
Before Katie Holmes and the couch-jumping fiasco, and even before Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise was married to actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990. Mimi is believed to have introduced Tom to Scientology, although it appears she has since left the church. When Tom and Katie got divorced last year, Mimi told Us Weekly, “I wish them both the best.”
3. Jennifer Lopez & Chris Judd
Before J.Lo was married to Marc Anthony, and before the phrase “Bennifer” was ever uttered, she was married to back-up dancer Chris Judd from 2001 to 2002. But this wasn’t even J.Lo’s first marriage. She had an even more obscure relationship with Cuban actor Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998. There have been some legal issues in the years since their divorce, including a sex tape scandal.
4. Angelina Jolie & Jonny Lee Miller
Before Brangelina started, and even before Angie was weirding it up with Billy Bob Thornton, she was married to British actor and current Elementary star Jonny Lee Miller from 1996 to 1999. Oh, and at their wedding she supposedly wore a T-shirt with Jonny’s name written on it in blood. So that’s lovely.
5. George Clooney & Talia Balsam

These days George Clooney is known for thinking commitment is gross, but in 1989 he was very much committed to actress Talia Balsam… until 1993 when they got divorced. These days George can be found romancing the younger ladies, and Talia can be found being married to John Slattery, aka Roger Sterling on Mad Men. She even played his wife on the show!
6. Olivia Wilde & Tao Ruspoli
This actually wasn’t that long ago, but am I the only one who forgot that Olivia was married before she and Jason Sudeikis got engaged? This marriage was actually pretty long, compared to some of the others on this list. It lasted from 2003, when Olivia was 19, to 2011. Tao Ruspoli is an Italian filmmaker and musician. And oh, yeah, he’s kind of royalty.
7. Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Esposito
Yeah, this happened. From 2006 to 2007, Bradley was married to Jennifer Esposito. These days, however, he can be found posing for awkward pictures in a Paris park with a girl in overalls named Suki Waterhouse.
8. Julia Roberts & Lyle Lovett
These two met on the set of The Player and were married in 1993, back when Julia’s grin endeared her to us and didn’t make us roll our eyes (at least in my experience). They got divorced in 1995, and Julia went on to marry Daniel Moder, have three kids, and practically fall off the face of the earth.
9. Jason Sudeikis & Kay Cannon
I discovered this while falling down a Google rabbit hole from researching Olivia Wilde, Jason’s current fiancee. Apparently from 2004 to 2010 Jason was married to Kay Cannon and forgot to tell me. Kay Cannon, in case you weren’t aware, was a writer-producer for 30 Rock, works on New Girl, and also happens to have written Pitch Perfect. Talk about a funny pairing that I didn’t know existed and therefore couldn’t appreciate. Darn you, Hollywood.
10. Uma Thurman & Gary Oldman
These two make up arguably the most equally famous couple on this list, besides maybe Bradley and Jennifer. Uma and Gary were married from 1990 to 1992. They met on the set of the film State of Grace. Uma went on to marry and have two children with Ethan Hawke, and is now with financier Arpad Busson, with whom she has a daughter.
