This is it. I’m officially obsessed with One Direction, and I don’t care who knows it. Don’t worry, I’m nowhere close to being featured in any British TV documentaries, but I have created a Pandora station in their honor. And it really shouldn’t be something I need to apologize for, since they’re only a couple of years younger than me, and so far they’ve refrain from wearing diaper pants or peeing in mop buckets. The thing that attracts me to these five lads is that they appear to really enjoy each others’ company, and on top of that they don’t take themselves too seriously. That’s why the band’s response to Taylor Swift’s maybe-diss of Harry Styles at the VMAs officially solidifies my interest in them.
At the New York premiere of their movie One Direction: This is Us last night, Vulture asked the boys what they thought about Taylor calling out the inspiration for her song “I Knew You Were Trouble” when accepting an award for it. That inspiration is maybe, possibly, I’m-totally-not-sure Harry Styles. The guys answered with humor and maturity and showed their willingness to come to each others’ defense. It all started with a joke from Liam Payne.
“When she said those things about Niall, we were very, very pissed off,” he joked. Then Niall Horan joined in on it: “I was so upset that she would go writing songs about me after all we’ve been through.” Back to Liam: “Hashtag get over it … I was going to do a Kanye! It’s the best video of all time!” What stopped him? “Kanye himself.”
Yes, they actually turned it into a joke about the song being about Niall, and then used the word “hashtag.” To top it all off, Harry himself wouldn’t even comment. When you add this to his composed reaction shot after Taylor made the diss, as well as his recent admission that he totally expects her to write songs about him, and Harry has his “ex” beat by many, many points in the maturity department. Instead, Harry preferred to talk about the orange he was eating during the show, which he tried not to spray on Rihanna. What is that feeling in my heart?
I should probably point out, lest Swifties bite my head off, that the song might not actually even be about Harry Styles. While Taylor seemed to imply that he was the inspiration in an interview back in March, a lot of people argue that she wrote it before she and Harry even knew each other, and it might be about Conor Kennedy or John Mayer or Jake Gyllenhaal or let me count the boyfriends. No matter who inspired it, when you juxtapose this response with Taylor’s preteen behavior, it’s pretty clear who the more mature party is. And Harry has four adorable tight-pants-wearing mates to back him up. Can’t you totally see why naked Lady Gaga jumped to their defense this weekend? They’re impossible to resist.
