Even though I fast forward through the majority of Saturday Night Live episodes, I still get excited for new cast members. You never know who will be the next Tina Fey or Amy Poehler or Kristen Wiig. Say what you want about the show not being funny anymore, but it’s still the number one place to pick up a hot new girl crush. Just last season I added Kate McKinnon to my collection of women I’d like to mentor me or befriend me or even just glance in my general direction once.
So you can imagine my dismay when I saw that they’re rumored to be hiring four new featured players for the upcoming season and only one of those rumored four is a woman. While I’m sure Beck Bennett, John Milhiser and Kyle Mooney are wonderfully talented performers, it’s just not fair that only one woman made the list. I know, I know, gender shouldn’t come in front of talent. If these were the four most talented people, then these were the four most talented people. I’m sure that Noël Wells would hate be known as the woman who got hired because they need to hire a woman.
But I just have a hard time believing that there aren’t more talented women out there who could’ve made the cut. Just a few months ago we named five up-and-coming women in improv who we think are most definitely talented enough to be on the show. For a show that’s long been plagued by allegations that they’re a boy’s club, they could’ve put a little more effort into evening out those numbers. Or god forbid, hired more women than men this time around.
If I did my math correctly, that leaves us with 6 women and 9 men for the upcoming season. Sure that’s not the worst ratio, but it’s still not even. By continuing to hire more men than women on that show, Saturday Night Live continues to make the statement that there are more funny men than women out there– that the numbers are uneven because that’s science baby and there’s nothing that any of us can do about it. However we know that’s not true and it’s beyond time that SNL know that too. Since we’re still working with rumors and not confirmations, I hope they know that it’s not too late to fix it this time around.
