Taylor Swift is a wizard, you guys, and this proves it. She has a thing during the concerts on her Red tour where she sometimes brings along a special guest artist to play one of their songs with her, and she’s been getting some pretty big name people to do it. She had Sara Bareilles the other day, and Cher Lloyd, and last night she got Tegan & Sara to sing their hit ‘Closer’.
What? How? Are people in the industry still fans of hers? I mean other than Lena Dunham, obvi, who is the voice of a generation and she be trusted in all ladymatters. But what do people continue to see in Taylor? I’ll acknowledge that her music is really catchy, and I have to admire her success, but the further she progresses in her career, the less and less genuine I feel like she is.
Part of the allure when Taylor first got famous was how sweet and humble and awkward she was, right? But look at her now! She’s, like, swaggering across the stage, showing off her body, and talking to her audience like she’s their first grade teacher. It feels like Tegan & Sara are who she brought for show-and-tell, and she wants the kids to guess first, so she keeps giving them clues in a really awkward, stylized way. Even the way she handles the mic is so phony, I feel like. I’m not into it.
And for Tegan & Sara and all the other artists who join her, what’s the benefit to them? Her audience only wants to hear her singing whatever song they’re there to sing, so she’s always gonna get more applause than they do. It’s such a weird thing. Or else she’s gonna dance awkwardly through your song like she does in this video. I don’t know. I just hate it. I feel like Tegan & Sara and Sara Bareilles are really soulful, real artists, so it’s really odd to see her doing such showy moves during their songs, and stepping out to take solos and pretending they’re her friends. But maybe that’s just me.
