This is so dumb of me, but I’m constantly forgetting that Oprah isn’t like…a politician or a queen or a foreign dignitary. My brain always assumes that she’s the type of person who’s supposed to be very reserved and hold it together in any and every situation and sip her tea very quietly. She sits up primly in her seat in a power suit with sensible shoes and she must always be spoken to in hushed, reverential tones. Right?
But that’s not really the deal at all, when you think about it. Sure, she’s one of the richest and most recognizable humans in the whole wide world — except Switzerland — but she got there by being a very personable interviewer, someone who loves to laugh, and basically just a big-time enjoyer of life in general.
So I guess it should go without saying that she’d be an excellent guest for the Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, but somehow I didn’t put those pieces together until I actually saw it for myself. And oh my god, Oprah is so fun! You guys, I just want to hang out with her and let her slap me and call me a trifling bitch! Of did I not mention? She does that to Andy Cohen in this video, replicating a scene from her new movie The Butler, which is out now. It’s amazing. (The moment, not the movie. I haven’t seen the movie yet.)
Vulture put together an insanely great compilation of all the best moments that gives you a really clear glimpse of how laid back and awesome she is (even though she hasn’t smoked weed since 1982), but they’ve used some sort of wizardry to keep me from linking to it, so you’ll have to be satisfied with this. It’s a game Andy and his writers made up called Encycl-O-pedia, quizzing Oprah on all things Oprah, and it’s just exactly the perfect amount of charming and flash-backy. Enjoy.
