Lea Michele’s Heartbreaking Speech About Cory Monteith Will Make You Cry

Lea Michele GIF Teen Choice Awards 2013Oh man you guys. I hope you showed up to the Teen Choice Awards prepared to experience the full range of human emotion, because things got especially devastating when Lea Michele gave an unexpected speech about Cory Monteith just now. Most of the presenters and winners alike have been keeping things pretty light this evening — think Rebel Wilson in a wetsuit and Adam DeVine photo-bombing the ceremony – so when they called Lea’s name to accept the award for Best TV Actress in a Comedy, I was positive she wasn’t in the building.

Since she wasn’t seated with the rest of the cast and she didn’t join them onstage to accept when Glee won, I assumed she understandably wasn’t ready to answer questions about Cory or put on a brave face. After all, she just posted her first tweet about the tragedy two weeks ago. But then holy crap she came out from backstage and hit me and everyone else with a completely unexpected speech that had tears literally running down my cheeks. Ugh. I can’t even imagine what she’s going through, and the fact that she’s able to get up in front of a nation of people and speak about it emotionally, yes, but also still intelligently and coherently — is amazing to me.

I could try to paraphrase it for you, but no one could possibly say it better than Lea herself did just now, so please watch and marvel at her incredible strength and poise.

“Thank you guys. Thank you. I just wanted to be here today to personally thank all of you and tell everyone out there how much all of your love and support has meant to me over these very past difficult few weeks. Thank you. Not that I had any doubt before, but you guys are most certainly the greatest fans in the world. And I wanted to dedicate this award to Cory. For all of you out there who loved and admired Cory as much as I did, I promise that with your love we’re gonna get through this together. He was very special to me, and also to the world. And we were very lucky to witness his incredible talent, his handsome smile, and his beautiful, beautiful heart. So whether you knew him personally, or just as Finn Hudson, Cory reached out, and he became a part of all of our hearts, and that’s where he’ll stay forever, so thank you guys so much. Thank you.”

Ouch. My heart. Let’s everyone send her a few loving thoughts as well, while we’re at it. It’s the least we could do.

I admit that I am not a fan of Lea’s acting/singing but I am deeply impressed with the strength and grace she has shown during what has to be the hardest thing to deal with in her life so far.
I hope she continues to accept the love & support she’s been receiving from others and continues down the very long road of healing that she is on.

She earned a ton of respect from me from the way she’s handled this situation and it’s definitely changed the way I look at her.

We were crying but why even though she seemed sad she had no tears coming out her eyes that was strange.

I was just reading your piece about how much of a diva Lea is. It came up when I Googled Lea Michele and Kate Hudson to try and find pictures of a black dress Lea was wearing whilst with Kate on the red carpet. Does this article mean your opinion has changed? Do you think she may be a different person now?

This post is me showing compassion for someone who went through something unimaginable. I haven’t interacted with her since, so I can’t speak intelligently about how it’s changed her as a person, although it undoubtedly has.
