My parents used to bemoan any offspring that didn’t include my sister and I, always saying that they “hated other people’s children.” I used to think this was really mean, until I entered my mid-twenties and realized that the only children I like are the ones I’m related to (because they honestly have great parents). Facebook humble-bragging about “baby Billy’s potty training” and the like makes me strongly consider punching myself in the face. Anyway, while promoting a clip from the new Disney film, Maleficent, Angelina Jolie shared a few tidbits from the set–one of which included the sheer terror she would incite in hearts and minds of the small children visiting the set. So… where do I get my Maleficent costume?
“These little kids would visit the set, and I would think, ‘Oh, I am a Disney character,’ so I would go over to them, and say, ‘Hi there.’ They would just scream. One little kid even said, ‘Mommy, please make the mean witch stop talking to me.’ “
Now, I don’t hate children – I’m even pretty sure I want my own some day. My real problem is obnoxious parents. But since there will always be obnoxious parents who raise obnoxious children, I’m just saying I wouldn’t mind dressing up as Maleficent on Halloween (or a Saturday at the mall playground) and shaking things up a bit.
Angelina went on to describe the character of Maleficent as one she’s loved since childhood (of course she has), because “she had this elegance and grace, and yet she was so cruel. Just wonderfully and deliciously cruel.” Which is weird, because up until recently that’s exactly how I’d describe Angelina Jolie.
