Hate to be the bearer of bad news on this beautiful summer morning, but Lisa Kudrow confirmed on CONAN last night that the long-awaited Friends reunion will never happen. Then she went on to paraphrase Justin Bieber and was all like “wellll, never say never, but yeah never.” While the rest of the world mourns this tragic news, I’m kinda into it. Especially after seeing the incredibly awkward half-cast reunion on The Ellen Show earlier this year.
There are some shows, such as Arrested Development, that deserve to be brought back from the dead. Then there are other shows, like Friends, that lasted for 11 seasons and pretty much played themselves out. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the show and I mourned it when it went off air. Then I moved on because they’re not real people and they weren’t real friends. On one hand, I’d love to see what became of Rachel and Ross, Monica and Chandler and Phoebe and Mike. On the other hand, NOTHING HAPPENED. They are just characters. They did not go on living without us. They simply ceased to exist. Jennifer Aniston never wakes up thinking, “I wonder what that blogger named Jenni is up to today?” So we should never wake up thinking, “I wonder if Rachel and Ross turned out to be happy?”
Remember when everyone clamored for the Sex and the City movie. Then we got two of them and felt really upset with ourselves for ever liking that show? That’s what would happen if Friends returned. We’re not 15 anymore guys. Rather than spending the reunion focusing on their characters, we’d spend it wondering how Central Perk possibly stayed open all these years. Not only does it frequently let large groups of friends sit around without ordering anything, but the rent for a place that size would’ve skyrocketed by now. Also how Phoebe ever managed to pay her rent. I know this is painful to hear, but I promise you that this non-reunion’s for the best.
