Harry Styles Doesn’t Think He’s Bisexual — But Even If He Is, Who Cares, Y’Know?

Harry Styles attending Brit Awards February 2013Well the sun is up, the birds are singing, and it’s a day ending in ‘Y’, so I guess it’s time for me to come up with yet another reason that Harry Styles is swiftly (but grudgingly) becoming one of my more favorite-ish people. I’ll admit that I got a bad taste in my mouth from him when he dated one of my less favorite-ish people, Taylor Swift, and I think I let that negatively affect my opinion of him moving forward. But now that he’s out from under that high-waisted, guitar-strumming rain cloud of a serial dater, his cheeks are looking rosier every day. I guess sunlight’ll do that to ya. (Metaphor achieved.)

But anyway, it was just last week that I was impressed with Harry for standing up to the Westboro Baptist Church when they picketed a One Direction show, accusing the boys of being homosexual for their affectionate behavior onstage. And even though Harry is a member of two groups not traditionally known for their maturity or tolerance (millionaires and nineteen-year olds), he managed to respond to the hate-fueled protest with exactly those qualities, tweeting simply, “Despite the company outside, I believe in equal rights for everyone. I think God loves all. Thanks for coming to the show though.” Perfect. Love it.

And now, continuing that trend, Harry is responding to rumors that he’s dating a guy — twenty-eight year old Nick Grimshaw, British television and radio presenter with whom he’s often seen. Nick came out in August of 2012, and ever since then, Harry has apparently been dogged by rumors that the two of them are together; rumors that he responded to in an interview with British GQ for their August issue:

Harry:”What rumours would they be?”
GQ: That you’re an item.
Harry: “Oh, really? I didn’t even know. We’re not dating, no. We’re just friends.”
GQ: So you’re not bisexual?
Harry:”Bisexual? Me? I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure I’m not.”
GQ: Do these rumours feel at all intrusive?
Harry: “Some of them are funny. Some of them are ridiculous. Some of them are annoying. I don’t want to be one of those people that complains about the rumours. I never like it when a celebrity goes on Twitter and says, “This isn’t true!” It is what it is; I tend not to do that. The only time it gets really annoying is that if you get into a relationship and you get into a place where you really like someone and then things are being written in the papers that affect them and how they see you. Then it can get annoying.”

I really admire someone who can address rumors about their own sexuality without painting any other lifestyles in a negative light, and Harry is becoming the master of doing that. He doesn’t think he’s bisexual, but he’s not denying it in a way that makes it seem like that would be a bad thing. It’s just not…his thing. And that’s a surprisingly mature concept to be on board with as a teenager. Especially when you take a look at his peers. Cough cough Justin Bieber cough cough.

I admire the fact that he genuinely doesn’t seem too bothered by rumors. Even at this young age he’s comfortable in his own skin, good for him! He associates with who he wants to and doesn’t care about people’s opinions.
