Immediately after Arrested Development season 4 premiered on Netflix in May — heck, even before it premiered — fans starting asking when they could expect season 5. Since then, the answer has been various forms of “Maeby.” But this is the most confident response we’ve gotten about it. At the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal, creator Mitch Hurtwitz was asked if the show would be returning, and he replied, “Definitely.” That’s right. Definitely. Like for real, for sure, for certain, for shizzle. It’s happening, my friends. I think I speak for everyone when I scream, “AHHHH I KNEW IT!”
Apparently Hurwitz then turned to Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief of content, and said, “I don’t want to get into a whole negotiation right now… but I’ve got a family to feed.” And this wasn’t some awkward situation where Netflix was like, “Umm, we need to discuss this further.” Sarandos said he was up for doing the show’s return “in any form.” Guys, it’s happening! Let’s give Mitch Hurwitz a big hand for giving us a direct answer. And I mean a big hand as in applause, not in the Buster Bluth sense.
But but but that’s not all! Hurwitz also elaborated about what he wants the new stuff to entail, and it sounds like it could fix the biggest complaint fans had about season 4. That complaint being, of course, that we didn’t get to see the cast onscreen together enough, due to scheduling difficulties relating to their famous person statuses.
I keep thinking about it, and why don’t we do the movie version of this and then do the series, because this series kinda peaks with the story? I kinda go back and forth between that and a series. But here’s the most important thing, whatever we do, I want to get the cast all together and not do another anthology thing, and that’s why I keep thinking about kicking off with a special or a three-part show and then going into a series.
So the show will definitely be coming back in some form, and this time we hopefully won’t have to go multiple episodes jonesing for some Buster storylines and not getting one FOREVER. Sorry, that was me projecting my own personal problem with the season onto everyone who watched. But seriously, where was Buster for like the first 10 episodes?! Let’s just hope the cast is okay with this. They best be practicing their chicken dances as we speak.
