Here’s Your First Look At Jamie Foxx As The Villain In The Amazing Spider Man 2

Jamie Foxx as Electro in Spider Man 2 teaser July 2013Comic Con is going on right now in San Diego in all its sneak peek glory, but if you were as unpopular as I was in high school, I guess you already knew that, huh? For those of you who did have a date to prom, let me give you some quick background. Comic Con began as exactly what its name is short for — a comic book convention — but over the years has expanded to include panels and previews and special events for pop culture phenomena that are only vaguely nerdy, or geeky, or whatever the preferred nomenclature is now for things that are basically mainstream.

One of those things is The Amazing Spider Man 2, which, while it is a comic book movie, is also a blockbuster sequel, so it fits in both categories. Anyway, they released a little teaser trailer for the movie’s villain (or one of them, more on that later), a character named Electro, played by Jamie Foxx. Here it is:

People more aware of the ebbs and flows of the movie market than I have already expressed some concerns about The Amazing Spider Man 2, pointing out that they’ve been behaving kind of erratically. They cut Shailene Woodley‘s character of Mary Jane from the movie altogether, moving her to the third and fourth films even though they’d already filmed substantial footage. At first I wasn’t 100% sure I believed the statement released by the studios, predicting that maybe they were gonna sneak her in there as a surprise, and were just trying to throw us off, but I’ve come around to believing them, and it worries me.

And in further worrisome news, it sounds like this blue-faced, cheesy-grin bearing villain isn’t the only one being crammed into the sequel. The Atlantic Wire points out that they’re also adding in Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti, and the role of British actress Felicity Jones has yet to be fully revealed, but Felicity herself says:

“It’s all quite shrouded in secrecy, but I’m the Goblin’s girlfriend – I’m in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I’m on the dark side.”

So not only is she herself on the dark side, as she puts it, but she’s also revealed that she’s dating a well-known villain from the Spider Man canon, the Green Goblin. Which presumably means that he’ll be appearing in the film as well. Which brings the villain count to…four? And the hour count to…I don’t even want to take a guess, but I’ll put money on it being another 2.5+ hour epic. GUH.

I hate how ppl assume this is another Spider-Man 3 with all the villains. They know what they’re doing, there are smart ppl working on this movie and they won’t repeat that mess. Electro is the main villain, Rhino is just a thug for hire and it’s been confirmed that he only has a small role, and Norman Osborn – the mastermind – will show up at the very end as the Green Goblin and you know what will happen (poor Gwen) I don’t think you can count Felicity Jones girlfriend role as a full fledged villain…BTW The Dark Knight has just as many villains and I didn’t see anyone complaining. It’s not how many villains you have, it’s how you use them and how they’re all used to tell the story. If all the villains are unrelated and doing their own thing like in Spider-Man 3, then yeah, we’ve got problems.

That’s true, The Dark Knight was awesome. I hope we get a repeat of that.
