Gabourey Sidibe Pranked Jimmy Kimmel’s Wedding, And I Sure Hope The Bride Was In On It

Jimmy Kimmel Molly McNearney November 2012

Our late-night buddy Jimmy Kimmel got married this weekend! The lucky lady is Molly McNearney, co-head writer on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The wedding took place Saturday in Ojai, California, and was attended by celebrity friends like Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi, and even Jimmy’s arch enemy Matt Damon. You might have expected Matt to be the one to pull a prank on Jimmy on his big day, like he did when he hijacked his talk show a few months ago. But it was actually Gabourey Sidibe, based on the novel Push by Sapphire, who seems to have pulled off the day’s big prank.

Photos show Gabourey arriving to the wedding in a wedding gown and veil, and The Daily Mail suggests it was part of a prank in which Gabourey was “taking the place of his bride to be.” Of course, they also call Gabourey an “Oscar winner,” which my encycopedic knowledge of the Oscars tells me is not true, so who knows what this was all about.

Whatever the stunt was, I’m just hoping Molly was in on it. I’m all for playing around and having a good time at your wedding, as long as the most important people involved are okay with it. In this case I’m not really worried about Jimmy’s knowledge of the prank, because he encourages people to prank their loved ones all the time, so goodness knows karma has caught up with him. Plus, pictures from the reception show him smiling with Gabourey, so all seems well. But I just hope Molly was okay with it. Since she’s marrying Jimmy Kimmel and she writes for his show, something tells me she’d be cool with it. But you never know. Remember a few weeks ago when that video of the maid of honor channeling Eminem at the reception went viral? All I could think was, “In ten years people are going to look back on that wedding and remember that rap instead of the couple.” I certainly can’t speak for any of these couples in particular, but I would totally understand if the people who are there to declare their undying love for each other are kind of annoyed when someone else hogs the attention.

Gabourey has taken part in a few of Jimmy’s sketches, including the amazing “(I Wanna) Channing All Over Your Tatum.” (See GIF below.) Maybe this will be part of an upcoming segment on Jimmy’s show?

I love when celebrities do normal-friend things with their other celebrity friends

I’m sure even if she wasn’t, she’s the kind of woman who can just “whatever” her way out of whatever funk it might put her in. She’s in show business; she’s marrying a guy with a lot of celebrity friends; celebrities are attending the wedding – many of whom are more famous, better looking, thinner, whatever. But they’re there to celebrate her and her husband. Yeah, maybe the bridal party’s dates will look back and remember the stunts, but for the people there who are actually there for the couple, I think it’s just a laugh at the moment and a celebration of a marriage which hopefully will still be around to celebrate.

Yeah, odds are she was fine with it. I just worry about pranks like that sometimes.
