Damon Wayans Jr. Returning To New Girl Is The Next Best Thing To Happy Endings Returning

Coach New Girl

I’ve been grieving pretty hard since Happy Endings was canceled and USA failed to pick it up like we had so much hope they might. So I’ll be happy to see any of its hilarious stars getting more work. It’s a win-win situation, because they get money and I get to see them. So I’m obviously pretty excited about Damon Wayans Jr. returning to New Girl next season to reprise his role as Coach. You might remember him being hilarious in the pilot, and then you might also remember when Happy Endings took off and Damon left New Girl to be replaced by Lamorne Morris as Winston. According to TV Line, Damon is “nearing a deal” to return as Coach for “a significant Season 3 arc.” And according to E!, he’ll be in six episodes with the option to stay on. What what! Hey, if I can’t have Brad Williams on my screen every week, I might as well have his twin Coach. Oh, did you not know that TV characters played by the same people are actually long-lost twins? I guess you’ll be thinking about triplets Elaine Benes, Christine Campbell and Selina Meyer a little differently now.

It looks like at least part of the cast will be excited for Damon’s return. Jake Johnson, aka Nick Miller, told TV Line last month he’d love to see a Coach return.

“I would be surprised if he doesn’t come back for a while. There would be such funny episodes with the Coach seeing what’s happened in the past two years since he’s [been] gone.”

While I’m super-excited to see Damon back on my screen in a role that was honestly one of the best parts of the pilot, I am a little worried about what this could do to the roommate dynamic on the show. I’d hate for this to alienate Winston even further, because I actually think he’s a great character who hasn’t been given the best storylines. Of course, E! reports that according to sources, Coach will “be heavily integrated into Winston’s storyline.” That would give Winston something more to do, so maybe it’ll be a good thing.

If you never saw the New Girl pilot or need a refresher about what Coach was like, feel free to study the video below. He has the best intentions, but the execution isn’t always great, you see.

I basically mourn the loss of Happy Endings everyday so at least there is one bright tiny spot in the midst of all this darkness.

I’m still in denial that it’s not coming back. Also that Two and a Half Men can stay on the air despite missing 2/3 its original cast and Happy Endings can’t/
