I can’t decide if celebrities keep saying that Amanda Bynes is totally fine because they’re oblivious enough to genuinely think she is, because they’re looking for some publicity, or because they’re trying to be polite, but either way, Nick Cannon just jumped on that train as well, and his response is as puzzling as the rest of them.
I personally don’t feel that Amanda Bynes is doing at all well. I think she’s undergoing a mental collapse, and it’s evidenced in her downward spiral and increasingly erratic tweets calling everyone from her own niece to Drake to Barack and Michelle Obama ugly and repeatedly insisting she’s going to get plastic surgery on her nose for a birth defect. I think if you honestly look at her behavior, you can see that she’s not in a good place, and yet celebrities keep talking to and about her as if she’s just ‘going through a phase’ or ‘doing her own thing’. Pretty mellow terms for a mental health crisis, if you ask me. Speaking of which, here’s what Nick had to say recently about his former All That costar:
“She actually called me and I told her, ‘Yo, if you need any help, I got you!’ At the end of the day, I know a duet between us would be entertaining!”
Yeah good. Definitely make plans to record music with her. I’m sure that will absolutely happen. Don’t you have anything to say about her recent behavior, though? After all, it was less than a month ago that you told Howard Stern you’d tried and failed to reach out to Amanda and called her recent transformation ‘sad’. Seems like you’ve kinda changed your tune, bud:
“It’s always sad that in this industry you get to see people through their growing pains, [but] I think she’s actually going to make it out of this situation in a positive way.”
That’s a lovely pipe dream you’re smoking, but I think ‘growing pains’ is an extremely generous term for what Amanda’s going through, and I don’t think you — a father of two! — are doing her any favors by ignoring her cries for help and planning a collaboration with her. I hope she does come out of all this in a positive way, but it’s seeming more and more like she’ll have to do it entirely on her own, without the help of anyone close to her. Except maybe Helen Mirren, because she is a total boss.
