Everybody’s talking about what the new Song of the Summer will be. It’s a very important issue, right up there with figuring out who fell for Kim Kardashian’s fake baby picture test and deciding whether we’ll still be eating cronuts ten years from now. Most people will probably agree that Summer 2012 was defined by Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.” It was catchy and bubbly and it caught on virally. You might remember that Carly’s song gained popularity when celebs like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez sang along in a lip-dub video. If I use my powers of celebrity mathematics, I’d say Bonnie McKee’s debut single “American Girl” should, by the transitive property or something, be the 2013 Song of the Summer. Why? Because the video features even more famous faces than Carly’s did. And also the song is incredibly catchy.
You might not know Bonnie McKee’s name at the moment, but I’m sure you recognize some of the songs she’s co-written: Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and more, Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” and plenty of tunes from the likes of Ke$ha, Britney Spears and Adam Lambert. A few of those aforementioned people appear in this video, understandably. But there’s a very good chance that at least one of your favorite celebs is also in this video, because the group of stars Bonnie enlisted to lip-sync to her song runs the gamut from pop singers to actors to comedians. I’m sure you’ll see at least one person you mildly like, even if you don’t live and die for them. Want a small sampling before you press play? There’s Katy Perry with a teddy bear, Macklemore in a bathtub, Jane Lynch in costume for Annie, George Takei being George Takei, and Carly Rae Jepsen herself wearing a cute hat. Oh, and there’s also Tommy Lee in drag if you’re into that. Plus many more!
And if the celebrities aren’t enough to get you to watch, I suggest you give it a listen just to hear how goshdarn catchy it is. It’s got the same poppy, danceable vibe as the songs Bonnie has co-written, plus it’s all about being an Amurrican gurrrl, so if that phrase describes you, you’ll be able to relate! And one of the lyrics is “I was raised by a television.” Umm, how do you know my life, Bonnie McKee? Now excuse me while I go make this the song of my summer by listening to it on a loop for the rest of the day.
And by the way, you can download the song for free on Bonnie’s site!
