Summertime is right around the corner and if you’re a movie buff that means it’s time to start anticipating the blockbusters to come. If you’re tired of the overly-done romantic comedies and action flicks, consider heading to the theater on June 7th to see Violet & Daisy, which is definitely a movie out of the ordinary. The film stars Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel as teenage assassins. The girls, who appear cute and kind, are not so sweet and innocent as they take on hit jobs and seek out high profile crime figures in New York City. No big deal, right? But their incentive — having enough money to buy expensive dresses — reminds us that although they carry guns and murder people, they’re still just teenage girls who have their priorities in check.
After her breakthrough role in Atonement, in which she was nominated for an Academy Award, Saoirse Ronan is an actress on the rise. Her other claims to fame include roles in The Lovely Bones, Hanna, and more recently, The Host. In Violet & Daisy, the talented 19-year-old Irish actress works perfectly right alongside Alexis Bledel. You know Alexis right? She’s most well known for her leading role in the TV series Gilmore Girls, but now also known as Beth Dawes in Mad Men. As counterparts and best friends, the two take on the Big Apple together, gushing over their favorite pop singer.. and well, shooting lots of bullets.
Directed by Geoffery Fletcher, who won an Academy Award for screenwriting Precious, Violet & Daisy is dangerous and intriguing as it defies gender norms and gives us some much needed girl empowerment on the big screen. Let’s face it, there’s not a girl out there who doesn’t wish she had the guts to be a serial assassin. I, for one, can’t wait to see both Saoirse and Alexis on the big screen as two fearless, vicious killers capable of not only firing ammo, but also boosting the esteem of girls across the country.
