Remember that Patrick Wilson episode of Girls where he and Lena Dunham spent two days together, enjoying steaks and sex with each other and the water pressure in Patrick Wilson’s absurdly large and glass-walled shower? I remember it, because it made me feel weird, which is apparently the exact same argument that Lena got from everyone after that episode. (Or at least all the h8terz, you know what I mean?)
“That was the only argument I heard: “It feels weird to me.” And I’m like, “Dude, I get it. It felt weird to kiss an actor that looked like Patrick Wilson.” I get so tired of having to cry out “misogyny,” but that’s what’s going on in this situation. People questioning the idea that a woman could sleep with a man who defied her lot in the looks bracket hews so closely to these really outdated ideas about what makes a woman worth spending time with. Really? Can you not imagine a world in which a girl who’s sexually down for anything and oddly gregarious pulls a guy out of his shell for two days? They’re not getting married. They’re spending two days [having sex], which is something that people do.”
I mean yeah. I’m not always the biggest fan of Lena (or her BFF-ship with Taylor Swift), but she has a solid point here. The reason the episode made me feel weird was because I was specifically weirded out by some of the things that Lena’s character Hannah said to Joshua, like when she told him to beg her to stay. That felt super weird and cringe-y to me, but not necessarily in a fake way, just a way I didn’t enjoy watching. The whole episode was so uncomfortably intimate, which is I think exactly what she intended. We’ve all done and said things or had whirlwind romances that make absolutely no sense by the light of day (let’s all take a moment to privately cringe about some of them, like I’m doing now), and the Girls version just happened to involve a handsomer-than-average man. But Lena’s 100% right, that so was not the point. The fact that a super handsome guy was interested in a super extroverted and uninhibited girl was by no means the weirdest part of the episode, and if it felt that way to you, then that’s disappointing for all us girls out here with personalities. And also Patrick’s wife,
HEY YA’LL CHECK OUT MY BIG SEXY BRAINS. Or don’t, whatever, just bear in mind that I’m gonna be wearing really low-cut skulls all summer in order to show them off.
