I hope you’ve been following Mad Men of late, because I’m about to drop some speculation bombs on you. I found them on the internet and initially scoffed but now my brain has acknowledged their potential for truth and it CAN’T STOP SPINNING. By the way, if you aren’t caught up with the show, I don’t know what you think you’re doing in this post, but it bears mentioning that there are spoilers ahead, so none of you get to yell at me in a couple sentences just because you didn’t think this through. Spoilers coming! Here they come! Obviously.
You may recall our (NSFW) conspiracy theory post from a few days ago about resemblances between Megan Draper (played by Jessica Paré) and Charles Manson murder victim Sharon Tate, specifically that white t-shirt with a red star that at the time I assumed was just from Macy’s, but that might actually herald Megan’s murder! MURDER! I thought by the time I caught up on all the details of that, I was finally up-to-date on all the possible ramifications of the series, but it turns out I’d barely grazed the tip of the iceberg.
A new theory posited by Dustin Rowles of Uproxx speculates that Megan Draper might already be dead, based on a lot of different pieces of evidence that I will briefly and inadequately address here. Click through to his post for a more elaborate and intriguing explanation, complete with video.
- Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm, obviously) had a hallucination about her, and he has a history of hallucinating the dead. (His brother Adam, Anna Draper, etc.)
- He almost drowned in the pool, meaning his hallucination could’ve taken place in the afterlife. Megan says “I live here” and tells Don “everyone is looking for you” before he comes to on the ground with his lungs full of water.
- Megan wore an outfit of red and black in one of her most recent scenes, the same colors Lane Price wore in his tie before he committed suicide. Dustin speculates that means she died by violent means.
- Don answers the door in a scene where he’s drinking and we’ve just seen Megan — when would he ever have answered the door if Megan was home?
It’s a lot to think about, for sure. There’s been so much weird behavior and dreamlike stuff of late that I’m not ready to rule anything out at all, including The Atlantic Wire‘s theory that it might be Don who’s actually dead. Well either way, it would definitely be a cliff-hangery “I see dead people” way to end the sixth season. M. Night Shamalama would be proud. And that’s the second time I’ve said that phrase this week.
