Apparently Christina Aguilera has lost a considerable amount of weight recently, which would be great if the internet wasn’t talking about it so weirdly. As you may recall, Christina has been being fat-shamed from near and far lately, because as a society, we believe that if someone puts their face on our televisions, that automatically gives us clearance to discuss the intricacies of their bodies while simultaneously ignoring any and all relevant details to their life. Hadn’t you heard? And even now that she’s successfully losing weight, I still take issue with the way this is being reported — as if Christina chose to get healthy as a direct response to being inappropriately (and incredibly harshly) criticized by strangers. As Radar Online reports:
According to US Weekly, the 32-year-old singer finally decided she wanted to get back in shape after the haters unleashed their fury on her. “A lot of people were on her about her weight and it depressed her,” her pal dished. “She went through a bad time because of the criticism.”
Good, great, I’m glad her ‘pal’ has such encouraging things to say about the motivations behind her achievement. “The internet bullied Christina Aguilera to lose weight, so she did! Hurray!” I think we all learned the appropriate lesson, here, don’t you? Because if there’s anything I want to encourage, it’s listening to what people on the internet say about your body! There’s no better way to merge body and mind and find inner peace, in that as soon as you read anything that’s being said, you’ll wish your mind had physically merged with your body, leaving you illiterate and at peace and blissfully unaware of internet trolls.
And speaking of inappropriate ways to discuss body image — if you’re like me, you won’t have a single problem with the way that her weight loss is talked about by a supposed ‘insider’ from The Voice:
“Everyone on set is really happy for her. Show execs hope her new look will spark viewers’ interest in her again, and get people tuning in. Christina’s weight is giving her a fresh start.”
Well good. I’m glad we’re all on the same page as far as Christina having nothing to offer unless she’s in prime physical condition. That’s a good conversation to get out of the way.
