Isla Fisher is always impressing me. Most of the time I’m simply impressed that she’s married to Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Borat, and has somehow managed not to disappear from society and wither away from embarrassment. In fact, she’s always very sweet and down-to-earth when I see her. That already makes her a magician in my eyes, but last night on The Tonight Show, Isla proved that she’s a magiciany type of magician as well, thanks to her new movie Now You See Me. She learned magic for the movie, and she was very excited to show off her skills with a little help from Jay Leno and Tyler Perry. So you can call this segment “Tyler Perry’s Isla Fisher Does a Magic Trick.”
Isla chooses to do a card trick, and she begins with the disclaimer that if the trick doesn’t work, we should all go see the movie anyway. This is a high-stakes talk show circuit, it seems. That’s what you get when you make a movie about magic. I wonder if it was in these actors’ contract that they had to successfully perform a magic trick on national television with Tyler Perry present before they got paid. I don’t know why I assume there was a Tyler Perry clause. It just seems right. I think Morgan Freeman fulfilled his magical obligations yesterday when he managed to give an interview while intermittently “resting his eyes.”
Anyway, back to Isla and her card trick. It involves an envelope with a playing card in it, and she appoints Tyler Perry to hold it for her like he’s watching her purse while she uses a fitting room. She does a little bit of backtracking and appears adorably nervous, which Jay Leno of course points out in his Jay Leno way. She says the card Jay picks from the deck will match the card in the envelope… hopefully.
Did you watch it, you guys? Good, then I can safely discuss the fact that she pulled it off and I am now replaying the video over and over to figure out how she did it. Magic tricks (ahem, illusions) always confuse me, and I always just give up and assume the person doing them is really some kind of wizard of something. So my conclusion here is that Isla Fisher is really magic. I guess we can just accept that as fact now. You’re welcome.
