I don’t know what I was expecting from Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon, formerly Don Jon’s Addiction, which premiered at Sundance. I mean, I’d heard it was a sexy comedy based on Don Juan, but I did not expect something so goofy and fun. Maybe I’ve just been watching JGL in too many Christopher Nolan movies and I forgot that he was once a long-haired alien on 3rd Rock from the Sun, and also that he’s overall pretty lovable in real life. There’s talk about the film being re-cut to score an R-rating, so maybe the trailer tries to appeal more to mainstream audiences, but I know that I want to see this movie very badly now.
Joseph is doing his best Jersey Shore impression here. He starts the trailer lifting weights with a cocky smirk on his face as his voiceover lists the things he cares about: his body, his pad, his ride, his family, his church, his boys, his girls, his porn, and gym, tan, laundry. Okay, so those last three were my addition. But you get the idea. This guy’s pretty douchey. But he’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so he’s a cute douche. When he says “family” he sounds just like Caroline Manzo, and it’s adorable. He even went all out and cast Tony Danza as his dad. It’s perfect.
JGL starts to fall for Scarlett Johansson, who is just as Jersey as he is. Is she chewing gum? Hell yeah she’s chewing gum. She tells him, “You’re cute, I like you.” That makes two of us, ScarJo. Scarlett likes romantic comedies (one of which stars a certain Anne and a certain Channing), and she and JGL clash over which is worse — rom-coms or porn, which JGL happens to be addicted to.
The trailer ends with JGL singing along to “Good Vibrations” in his car, and I would like to buy my ticket right now, please. I mean, I know it doesn’t come out until October 18th, but I just need to make sure I see this. It looks funny and full of parody and I need it gracing my eyeballs immediately.
Watch the trailer below and enjoy.
